PFT: NFL views DET situation as Lions trying "deception that backfired"; no changes coming

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the NFL does not plan to change the procedure for players reporting as eligible. The league views the situation as an effort by the Lions to engage in deception and gamesmanship that backfired.

Basically, the Lions wanted the Cowboys to think Skipper was reporting as eligible and that Decker was not. Which would have caused the Cowboys to cover Skipper, not Decker, when the play unfolded. The problem is that, in trying to confuse the Cowboys, the Lions confused Allen.

All I got from this is the NFL thinks their officials are dumbasses who get confused easily.

How bout them cowboys. I see it the exact same way.

Damn you mean teams actively engage in deception of the opponent.
Better ban play action and the read option before the officials get confused.

The problem is only one of them actually tells the ref that he's reporting so you basically have to be a moron to get confused, so of course the ref got confused.

Calling their own official a dumbass
They already said they downgraded the crew so they know they fricked it up. This is a sad spin to try to protect them
This is going to set the Lions and Campbell off even more

Think about it. “Look,” Campbell might have said, “we’ve got a play in the game plan tonight that includes throwing a pass to a tackle. But here’s what we’re gonna do. We’ll be making it look like a different guy is reporting as eligible than the one who is really reporting as eligible, because we want to confuse the Cowboys about who is and isn’t eligible. So when that happens, go along with it, OK?”
This is an idiotic play from Dan Campbell, the ref still has to announce the eligible lineman which would erase the deception immediately.

It’s Mike Florio, so I’d take to with a grain of salt.

The mental gymnastics the NFL goes through to absolve officials of any blame is impressive.
It’s wild when you think about it. You have a group of people who play a huge role in the outcomes of games and at no point are they ever held responsible for mistakes and if anyone even dares criticize them they get fined by the league. Amazing.

Since Goff was on the other end of this, I'm ok with it despite the obvious cheating that occurred.

FYI this ignores the BS tripping call that kept Dallas from icing the game.

Typical from league office.
Accountability for thee but not for me...

I want someone on the cowboys to just come out and admit that the retard ref told them the wrong number reported eligible.
This is some low shite by the NFL. Not as bad as the Nola No Call but it’s pushing it

The NFL has been dead to me since 2018 NFC champ. Shitty refs and shitty product

So no one made a million threads on this when the patriots did this to the ravens. The NFL made a rule change because Brady, now everyone is pissed because of the Lions. You're all 8 years too late. The defense used to be required to figure out who was eligible. That's what the rule should be.
