What in the hell is wrong with medical billing?

Why does it seem in the last few yrs I’ve been inundated with medical bills? I have 3 kids between the ages of 4 and 12, but every visit any of us go to I seemingly pay a copay and still get these stupid bills? Some I’ll even go, they tell me nothing is owed and still end up dealing with this nonsense. I guess I need to start keeping records of all of this to make sure I’m not being double billed, but why can’t they get it right from go?

The issue isn’t with the doctors office or the billers, it’s your insurance carrier.

Print a current EOB off your carrier site account or call to have one sent. Reconcile as you go.

I have the same issue. And it takes so long for insurance to figure out what they’re paying that I lose track of everything and end up just paying whatever bills I get

Thank obama, pelosi, (we have to pass the bill to see what's in it), and traitor mccain (nah nah, thumbs down) for the mess you are dealing with.
Dishonorable mention to all the other POS congressturds who helped it along.

I like how you can go to 1 hospital and end up with 683 different bills

I have to keep records and notes on all the bills I get. I call and ask what they are billing for and they don’t even know. I dont get and charges listed out, just a balance figure.

I was a medical billing manager a long time ago. I didn't know jack shite about medical billing and really only got hired because I knew the general manager. I got paid handsomely and wrote off a lot of shite because, again, I didn't know what the frick I was doing. I made it just over a year and bounced before they found out all the shite I did and canned my arse.

Hit my deductible then had to have wrist surgery in August
Said I had to pay 1600.00 when I got there
Got EOB in September showing total charges was 600.00
Called them & they confirmed credit & told me it would be mailed within 2 weeks
Called mid October, was told I was on list of refunds to be sent in November
Still don’t have my 1000.00 & all they say when I call is I’m on the refund list
I match up every EOB with my bills, they aren’t going to make it easy to get any overpayments back

The entire system is broken

It's an overly complicated system is the most straightforward answer.
There's many different insurance carriers and within each carriers theres a variety of policies with different deductibles, Co pays, coinsurance etc. There's no way doctors offices to account for all of theses differences outside of collecting the known co pay for the visit.
On top of that, what's being done for the visit isn't known until after the visit. Yeah, you get the office visit charge(e&m) but if youre kid had vaccinations, maybe had a strep test, or labs etc. These are all separate codes(cpts)/charges that will get submitted to insurance that has to be figured out on the backend depending on your deductible(if you have or haven't met it), your coinsurance, and what the contracted rate the doctor, hospital, etc. Afterwhich you get a bill.
There's a reason why administrative costs of delivering Healthcare is one of the main reasons for our high Healthcare costs.

American Medical billing is a pandemic. Its the most disorganized system in the world.

It’s the government’s fault. Get the government out and the insurance companies out and make it transparent and allow Drs to bill like other professionals (lawyers, CPAs, etc) based on time and published rates.
This will remove the bloat and the entirely flawed system and the distrust that goes with it.

If you met many of the people who have billing and coding jobs you'd understand.

I just got a refund check for an overpayment.
For a cash service.

Kid #2 had tubes, we had three different invoices for the same amount for the same hospital.
shite we got another one today for the same amount and it's been 10+months. I want to punch the doctor in the mouth just so he fixes it.
ETA: it was paid the first time.

Because they are trying to get money any way they can. Health care billing is straight up sketchy. They overbill any chance they get.
