A few months out and ready to book hotels, etc.
Been there?
Gimme those recommendations!
Best parts of town to stay in, hotels, things not to miss. Restaurants always a plus. Lessons learned too.
Bringing the family; the missus plus the teenage kids.
We don’t mind keeping it active. We are open to tours too!

I was going to suggest to go alone. The women are incredible around there

I had my days in the sun. More than I should have and better than I probably deserved.
I’m fortunate to have found a partner worthy of better than me and know it.
Doing my best now to show her and my kids as much of the world as I can.

I'll be in Prague in February and can report back

Been to Budapest and Prague 3 times. Vienna twice. While I liked Vienna, my comments are going to focus on Budapest and Prague. Prague is my favorite city in the whole world and Budapest would be second.
Prague
OMG! Greatest city in the world to visit in my book. If you can book this trip around Christmas to see the markets and festivities, even better!
We stayed at the Hotel Pod Veží and absolutely loved it. It is located in the city center next to the famous Charles Bridge.
We stayed at MOODs Charles Bridge the second time. Hotel is a good location, easy to walk to city center.
Third time was at the Hilton Prague. Nice hotel. Well situated just outside of the city center. We walked everywhere no problem at all. Think you could find better options though.
There are a gazillion dining options. One we liked was the Cafe Imperial. Impressive old dining room. Service was excellent. Various Czech national dishes.
I'm going to diverge some and HIGHLY recommend you take a side trip to Ceský Krumlov! About 2 1/2 hours from Prague. Could be a day trip. We hired a driver. Wasn't that expensive. Even though Ceský Krumlov is a small town and you don't need much more than a day to see all its highlights, I do recommend staying overnight! At night, the town has a completely different vibe.
Would recommend the Hotel Grand.
Budapest
Remember: Buda and Pest, separated by the Danube River, form the two halves of Hungary's capital, linked by the famous Chain Bridge. So you have to think through where you'd want to be.
Good article on the subject!
Our last trip we stayed at the Hotel Moments. The excellent location of the hotel allows you to explore the center of Budapest on foot without having to use a taxi.
Tons of attractions and things to do. I'm going to put in a vote for Memento Park! It's a home to a number of gigantic statues, and other communist monuments. It is spacious, the statues are fascinating. Have to rent a cab, but not that expensive. Maybe 20-30 minutes outside of town.
Another vote would be for the Hospital In The Rock! The Museum provides a captivating glimpse into Budapest's wartime past. The guided tour takes you through the underground tunnels and rooms, giving insight into the hospital's operations during World War II and the Cold War. The exhibits are well-preserved, including the surgical rooms and medical equipment.

Wife and I were in all three cites six months ago.
Started in Vienna, stay in the Wein Vienna district.
We stayed at the Hotel Domizil, located really close to St. Stephen's cathedral. Lots of restaurants close by. The Hotel Domizil serves a great breakfast. While in Vienna we saw all the sites(Hoffburg, Palace), but we also took two day trips.
One was an all day tour to Budapest through Viator. A Mercedes Benz van picked us up at 8am at our hotel and dropped us off that night at 7pm.
Budapest was nice, but it was one of the hottest days on record and aside from the Marriott very few places have air conditioning. Went into a Mc Donald's to get a Coke, and they didn't have A/C. Was glad I was going back to Vienna that night.
We also took a short trip to Bratislava, Slovakia. Vienna & Bratislava (Prescott) are the two closest capitals in the world, just an hour apart via a train that cost less that $10. We arrived at ten o'clock and were back in Vienna for dinner. While there we went to the Castle, St. Michael's gate, the Cathedral. Was a lot cheaper than Vienna.
Nice dinner- ef16 Restaurant (Fleischmarket 16 1010) you will need reservations.
Da Cappo Pizzeria has good Italian food, if you are looking to get a affordable meal for the entire family. Vienna is not cheap. Close to Stephen's Cathedral.
We then took a train to Prague, where we stayed for the rest of the week. Our highlights, aside from the usually sites, were a 5 course Medieval dinner and the European Sex Museum was interesting. We loved Prague, the food and attractions were awesome. The Devil Channel river cruise tour was nice and affordable if you want to take the family, its around an hour.
Meat Eater Steak and Wine, near the clock tower has good food.
We took the trains in Vienna from the hotel area to the Palace area, we used Uber when in Prague.

I’ve been to all three as well. While Prague and Budapest are amazing, I prefer Vienna. Make sure you stop at Demel chocolate factory in the city center. Get a “Schokobombe”. It will change your life. Get a sachertorte and coffee at Hotel Sacher. If not there, get a coffee at the Grand Hotel.
Great food everywhere.
In Prague, make sure you get a real kolache, as that’s where they were invented. Get a street dog with lots of mustard. Go see the astronomical clock.
Man, I wish I could go back!!

Spend as much time in Prague as possible. Spend as little time in Vienna as possible. Instead of Vienna, hit up Krakow. Krakow was awesome. I enjoyed Budapest too, just wasn't nearly as good as Prague/Krakow.

Now you're talking! Complete "scope creep" here but, would fully agree. We took a train from Prague to Krakow and it was great. Stayed 5 days, one of which we hired a driver and toured Auschwitz, a must see in everyone's lifetime if they can. Later went to Warsaw, which was also spectacular.

It's probably hard to get teenage kids to find a place and chill for an hour or three, so cut them loose walking around Vienna and find a traditional cafe and have a long breakfast or lunch.
Goldegg
Sacher Wien
Mozart
Hawelka
Landtman
Comfy green velvet booths. Newspaper. Rich coffee. Tasty goulash and schnitzel. Delicious pastry.

I’m planning on spending 4 nights in Prague near the end of my 31-day Europe trip. I’ll have 4-5 nights left afterwards before heading home and debating on where to visit. Someone told me to check out Budapest.
Any other suggestions? I fly back from Madrid.

On our recent trip to Prague, one feature we really enjoyed was the vintage cabrio car tour.

As noted, highly recommend touring the Czech countryside and going to Ceský Krumlov. Also as noted, Budapest is amazing. Think you could do both. Or, look into Poland.

That's a big question with a lot of considerations. Where else are you going, and in what order?
