Took the wife and kids and we all loved it.

It’s more of a prequel to the original Gene Wilder movie than the Johnny Depp version (which I hated)

Great nostalgic references to the original for those of us who watched it as kids, and also new whimsical moments for the kids today.

Timothy Chalemet (sp?) was awesome. He really showed his comedic timing and actually has a decent voice. Hugh Grant was rarely in it but stole the show when he appeared.

The cast was diverse but there was not a single “woke” moment for those that worry about that. In fact, the main antagonist is a black man.

It’s a fun show. Has lots of funny moments, and we enjoyed the heck out of it. Couldn’t recommend it more for a family.

Hell yeah, good to hear.

You can't touch Wilder but it doesn't mean you can't come in a close 2nd.

Did it feel slow/long?

What prequel backstory is needed? Do the grandparents have an orgy in their big bed?

They're far too lazy for group sex.

Not at all.

And I found myself laughing aloud a good bit. I didn’t originally want to go but the kids really wanted to see it.

I’m glad I gave in.

It’s the story of Wonka in his teens/twenties, not Charlie Bucket.

So, like Rings of Power, do they fail to explain why the lack of diversity occurs later on, or nah.

So you want them to specifically talk about the diversity? Or you just don’t want diverse people in the movies? Why would they make a point to bring that up? How would that look? “Yea Wonka got racist as he aged and kicked out all the minorities”.

What diversity? Some stories are as they are. Forced diversity for the sake of DEI credits is cringe and does nothing to support the source material.

That's why I asked. Because on the face of it, inserting 'muh diversity' (see black Ariel, Latin Snow White, Elves of color,etc...) is exactly that. These characters of color (aka colored characters) exist in the prequels, but not later on?

There are clever, authentic feeling ways, sometimes, to introduce new characters but too often Hollywood has chosen to either do a race swap, or worse, put in all these new characters and then leave it to the imagination of the audience to fill in what happens next. It's lazy, it's pandering and takes away from the original story.

Meh. Maybe we're always seeing them "just after", in an understandably relaxed state?

I just learned the original book had Wonka going back to Africa and saving some vunerable magical tribe of little black creatures and caging/shipping them by boat to his factory for a better life, away from predators. Then the author changed the story around the Civil Rights era that Wonka went to some magical island Loompaland and imported back some Oompa Loompas to save them from Whangdoodle (& so on) predators.
