The root canal isn't really that bad, and will relieve the pain immensely, only issue is you will be in the chair for a while.

Yea I got in a few days. I don't even remembers the RC. I just remeber the horrible pain rom the tooth. I wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

OK.
I got the recommendation, took the meds, read the study, and got similar feedback, but you do you.

The new technology is awesome where they skip the temp crown.
I went in, they did a CADD scan of my mouth (no nasty molds), hour later they had 3D printed my new crown in the office, put it in and I was on my way….

I don't know about his dentist.... but I got gas for that... and didn't mind a bit.

My husband had a root canal and literally went straight on to work. No problem.
I had one which was complicated by my twisty roots and pulp stones. Took one pain pill that afternoon and was good the next day.
Both of us have porcelain crowns and I forget mine is even there.
Both were done by regular dentists.
It will be an improvement from the pain you have now.

I’ve had a few root canals. They aren’t bad at all aside from being expensive.
A few weeks back, started having some severe pain at one tooth that previously had a root canal. Turns out I had a fractured root with an infection. Had it extracted last week in preparation for the dental implant. That whole process SUCKED but I have zero pain now. Took a couple of weeks to get used to not having a tooth. Still avoid eating on that side.
My dentist does all my work and he’s really quick with everything.

People always think so badly of someone getting a root canal... if you need a root canal you are damn glad to get it.
The procedure itself is pretty much painless after the novacaine is administered. The worst part is holding your mouth open for a long time.

So what exactly did you say to your wife?

for those of you who have had a root canal with a crown ... once the permanent crown is in place, will it just feel normal and natural as my regular tooth did before it cracked? Any additional care needed?
Over time, yes
I’ve had a front tooth crown going on about 30 years now & it recently chipped. Getting fitted for a new one, next week.
Best to keep clean with a water pick that gets under the gum.

I’ve had two root canals. I would say they are no worse than getting a cavity filled.

I had a similar experience a couple of years ago. I put Anbesol on the tooth as much as possible, and took Advil. It sucked. Unfortunately, when I finally was able to see an Orthodontist, the root was what was cracked. Had to have the tooth extracted, which was actually a great relief. The pain of the extraction was nothing compared to the constant pain of the cracked tooth. Then I got an implant. Expensive, but not too painful a process.
ETA: I saw an Endodontist, not an Orthodontist.

I won’t bore you with all the details but I’ve had essentially 8 root canals on 3 teeth in the last couple weeks. It’s usually 2 visits and they do a full root canal each time. The worst part is the numbing process, beyond that it’s just vibration and pressure. Just close your eyes so you don’t see the needles and tools.
I was in the chair for 1:45 yesterday.

If you go to an endodontist it would likely be done in thirty minutes, but you need two visits. As I noted, I had my last visit for three root canals yesterday and it was a long visit, I walked out under two hours and with some tooth reconstruction.

Root canals aren’t that bad. I’ve had several. The biggest issue is how long they take… hours in the chair. After that, it’s some sensitivity for a couple of days, and then done.
It is wild how much dental experiences vary. I just had one done 2 months ago and I was in the chair for slightly over 1 hour (15 minutes of that was blood pressure check and getting numbed).

The oral surgeon will shoot you up with pain meds and extract the tooth with a hammer and chisel, at least in my case he did.
The whole process takes a year to complete.
Bro, I think you have some repressed memories of being abducted and tortured.

Go to an endodontist. They specialize in root canals.
OP, something to be aware of that I didn’t know, you can experience bone disintegration around the area of the root canal. That’s where the infection settled in with my most recent issues. You could see a whole dark area around those teeth on my X-ray and my endo said it wasn’t uncommon but it’s definitely unsettling.

Smart
Had a cracked tooth a few years back. Had a root canal.
Couple of days later tooth started hurting and then I started running fever. Became infected.
Miserable
Finally had to have the tooth pulled. BTW, the root canal won’t be as bad as the pain you’re presently dealing with.
