I learned today that I have a cracked tooth. Pain started last Sunday, and has progressively gotten worse. I've had broken bones, sprains, and bone surgeries, and this ranks right up there for significant pain.

Not sure how I did it, or when I did it.

Is the pain I am experiencing coming from air that is now hitting the "exposed" nerve?

No amount of Aleve and Tylenol have worked effectively to alleviate the constant discomfort.

I've never had a root canal, so I am not sure what to really expect.

Scheduled for a root canal next week. My dentist could have done it today, but we opted for a round of antibiotics to eliminate or prevent any infection.

Ask Doc for some "good meds" to hold you till next week.

Weekend is coming.

I'm not looking forward to it, however, the end result of the root canal has to be better than what I am feeling right now.

At least with surgeries, I've always been knocked out. I'm not really keen on just numbing the area and then hearing the drilling sound.

it's actually called a fractured tooth, and if you're having pain, then yes, a nerve is exposed. you'll need a root canal, but they aren't as bad as ppl say.

your dds will make sure you are numb.

you'll need a crown as well though, and those are pricey af so prepare yourself for that.

and don't let them try to offer you a silver crown (trashy af). go with the tooth colored option- pricier but worth it. imho fwiw.

Happened to me last year. I went to my dentist and he made a mold of my tooth. The oral surgeon will shoot you up with pain meds and extract the tooth with a hammer and chisel, at least in my case he did.

The whole process takes a year to complete. You will need to go back to the oral surgeon thru out the year to check the progress.
A post will be put in to mount the "new" tooth to. Mine's been in several months now and so far, so good.

Good Luck!

Right around $1300 for everything. Dentist recommended a Zirconia crown. I don't know if this is good, bad, or indifferent. He said they used to use gold, then it was porcelain, and now its Zirconia.

I don't know what all you had going on but a root canal and / or crown dental procedures don't take a year start to finish.

also- an endodontist does root canals, but a general dentist can do them as well.

I'd go to an endodontist for sure for a root canal.

If you had to see an actual oral surgeon, then you had to have more than a simple fractured tooth/needing a root canal.

that sounds abt right. maybe even less than my area.

root canals aren't bad though. you probs wont even need narcotic pain meds.

also- if you can take both tylenol and ibuprofen, if you take 2 of each at the same time, like every 6 -8 hours, that should really be enough to take care of any post-procedure discomfort you may have.

Thanks for the tip. It has to be done, so trying to keep a positive approach about doing it.

Chewing right now sucks!

Q. for those of you who have had a root canal with a crown ... once the permanent crown is in place, will it just feel normal and natural as my regular tooth did before it cracked? Any additional care needed?

I had a root canal in HS due to an exposed nerve. The only thing that stopped the pain was putting a piece of ice in my mouth directly on the tooth.

I've also heard ice could have the opposite effect, so best of luck.

For me, I have found that anything too cold causes a sharp pain. I've also found that anything hot does the same thing as well. So ...

Just make sure they don’t pull all your top teeth out like the poster on here a month ago or so that it happened to his neighbor.

You had an implant, not a root canal.

oh, you had to have a dental implant done.

that makes sense why it took close to a year.

Eh.... they aren't really that big a deal anymore. I had one back in May... other than my lip and jaw being numb and not being able to eat that night, I honestly would have never known it. I think it all depends on how good your dentist is.

dental pain with hot beverages is usually indicative of an abscess.

which it's good that you're on antibiotics and waiting a couple weeks for the infection to clear before the dentist opens up the abscess.
