My 74 year old “neighbor” firmly believes that as long as he isn’t taking deer beyond the allowed limit and isn’t violating baiting/spotting laws or hunting out of season, he shouldn’t be forced to get permission from the state to take a deer on his own property.

I tend to agree with him. Hunting public land is one thing and in theory a license helps to fund the conservation of that land and its resources.

Curious what the board thinks about this.

He may own the land.

He doesn’t own the deer.

Why would he be concerned about some of the game laws but not the most basic one…..the one that allows the LDWF to operate?

I agree with his premise though.

Maybe if he had a high fence around his entire property where nothing could come or go that wasn’t already inside his fence. Kind of like a stocked pond on his property.

But short of that, all those deer on his property come and go and don’t belong to him. The deer he shoots on his property may have originally come from a piece of public land a few miles away that license fees pay for.

In MS it is legal to hunt without a license on land deeded in your name, so he’s not alone. Seems fair enough to me, he’s paying taxes on the property.

Is Louisiana not like that? Alabama and Tennessee are.

Setting the legal precedent that the landowner owns the wild animals on his land is a slippery slope. Should he then also be allowed to hunt at night? Kill over the limit? Shoot protected species?

A landowner or person leasing land primarily for cultivation, their spouse, and dependents under 18 residing with them, may hunt, trap and fish on such land without a license.

I own land in Louisiana but live in Texas, I buy a freaking $300.00 license every year to hunt my own land.

I should have bought a lifetime license when I was "In State".

As long as green jeans doesn't come on his property, he can do whatever he wants without a license.

My gf is from Arkansas and I can hunt their family land without a license. Why would I spend a few hundred dollars to hunt a weekend on private property? frick that.

What are they going to do if they catch him? Take away his hunting privileges?

Old guy wasn’t following the law anyways. He’d probably just move deeper into the woods to hunt.

I bet he wouldn't hesitate to call the game warden if someone was poaching deer off of his private property....

I understand his agrument and know a lot of guys that own large enough tracts to hunt on who do not buy a license.
But if he is LOUISIANA And over 60 I think he qualifies for a $5 a year license that covers everything. Now maybe he’s just totally opposed to having to pay money for any kind of government issued license but if it the money that’s the squabble, $5.00 is pretty cheap for basic hunting, deer, turkey, fishing and everything.

As a landowner in Ga I’m not required to have a hunting license to hunt deer on my property.

Georgia landowners don’t have to have a license as long as they are hunting their own property.
