The bride wants to do something different than the beach. We are thinking about a Grand Canyon vacation with the kids 12 and 15. What do I need to know? Are there ample things to do other than look at rocks? Thanks.

Rafting, horseback riding, jeep tour, and throwing rocks.
They’ll love it.

I highly recommend 2 days at the canyon and 2-3 days in Sedona. Unless you want to take the trip into the canyon and raft on the rivers, which will add a 3rd day to the canyon.
I copied and pasted my trip from another post:
We did this trip. Flew to Phoenix to make a road trip out of it. One of my favorite trips. Book Grand Canyon hotels months in advance. Watch YouTube videos about the canyon to learn what to do.
We did canyon first because the sedona to Phoenix drive was shorter. I figured a shorter drive to catch a flight home was smarter.
Flying to Flagstaff makes sense but we chose the easier route of Phoenix.
We went in April and you’ll see snow in flagstaff and maybe a little at the canyon.
2 days in the canyon works fine. 3 days in Sedona is ideal to fit a lot in, but you can make it 2 days if needed. You’ll need 3 days to travel. 7 or 8 days total.
Day 1 - fly to Phoenix. Rent car and drive to Grand Canyon (via Williams). Stop at Cave Creek Park to see cactus.
Day 2 - explore canyon until lunch. Bearizona (We loved it) in Williams then explore Williams and dinner.
Day 3 - canyon sights
Day 4 - drive to Sedona. Stop at Sunset Crater for 1 hour.
Day 5 - sedona Jeep rental from Make Your Expedition (get it for a full day or longer). Spend the whole day driving the trails. MUST DO. You’ll skip all the walking while hiking and drive the trails instead. Let the kids drive.
Day 6 - Sedona short hiking, horseback ride, shopping. There’s a cowboy Chuck wagon dinner show just west of sedona. We rode horses there but they didn’t do the show because of covid.
Day 7 - Montezuma Castle in the morning and Jerome for lunch. Relaxing evening in Sedona. You can skip this but if you have time, it adds so much value to the trip.
Day 8 - drive to Phoenix and fly home. Eat at In N Out burger in Phoenix for fun.

If you're insisting on going West, check out the Colorado Springs/Durango/Salida area.

Great info.
If you can elaborate more feel free.... we are gathering information about 2 days we'll spend in April in that area. We have kids 16/9/7 so would enjoy...
Interested in the rent jeep situation? Can't take the rental you have down those roads etc?

Thanks for the info. However, none of that sounds fun to me. Maybe I will suggest San Diego.

We did sedona once. Rented a Jeep from Barlow I think. It was a blast.

We did Phoenix which is great. Lots to do in drivable distance around it like Scottsdale and Tempe. The desert botanical garden is amazing and does a laser show on the mountain at night. Frank Lloyd Wright school Taliesen is nearby and a great tour. We took a flight out of a small airport north of Phoenix which flew us through the Grand Canyon and then landed at the Grand Canyon National Park. Looked around for the day then flew back to Phoenix. That was the way to go as it takes hours to drive to the park and we got views of the Canyon from the plane you can’t see any other way. If you do drive, Sedona is great but it’s absolutely flooded lately by tourists from California. Way over crowded.

For Sedona Jeep rentals, we rented the Jeep in the morning and brought it back the following morning. It’s loaded and ready for off road. They give you an iPad with maps and trails and tell you where to go. We did 3 trails in one day.
Definitely rent an entire day, it’s worth the money. Let the kids drive the trails. My 12 year old daughter was driving slow on a trail. Her first time driving. Just don’t tell the rental company.
If there’s a trail a Jeep can fit on, you can do it. We drove the devil’s bridge trail. Rode past everyone walking a mile or two. Parked and walked the last bit of the trail to the rock formation.
Dune buggies were popular on the trails. I liked the Jeep though as it’s a real car whereas the dune buggies are kind of like 4 wheelers.
If you cannot afford a Jeep rental, there are Jeep tours that pack people in the back and drive along trails. Very lame compared to driving yourself, but better than nothing I guess. We will never go back with our kids when they are teenagers, so the Jeep rental was worth the cost.

I wouldn’t go in summer, but you should look into MOAB with a day to Grand Canyon OP. Not close, but doable.
Unless you are a hard core crane caynon or hiking person Grand Canyon is a day trip in itself for most people.

It doesn't sound like you want to do anything major at the Grand Canyon. In that case, how about a Vegas trip and take a day to go see the Grand Canyon?

We did a very similar trip and it was great. Highly recommend the things you said.
OP - if this doesn't sound like things you would like San Diego is amazing and I would also highly recommend.

Sedona is overrated, imo. Unless you're big into hiking and off-roading it's a waste of time.
The Grand Canyon is cool to see, but again unless you enjoy hiking you'll be bored in 30 minutes.
I'd choose San Diego 100 times out of 100. And we go there multiple times a year.
