When it comes to your job, what do you value more - time or money?

You have young kids and a wife — which scenario would you rather?
A) $110k-$120k a year with 3 weeks of PTO but working almost every weekend and two late nights a week
B) $75k a year with potential $25k-$30k annual bonuses and 2 weeks of PTO but off every weekend and night

Time is money.

No thanks, money irrelevant

Depends on the scenario. Does my wife work or is it all on me?
A sounds miserable regardless though. I'd need to make at least double that salary to give up most weekends and some nights.

Take the plant job like a real man. Or learn to weld.

Obviously COL factors in here depending on where you're at.
You'd save yourself $25k in physical and emotional burnout.

F that. I used to do that BS when I was younger but it got old quick. Once I had kids, time off became much more important.

B.
You can work more later. You can't pick your kids up later (at least not without getting a hernia).

A is a total nonstarter. Not even close to enough money for me to work 6-7 days a week plus nights.
B is pretty weak too but I guess I’d take that over A.

Are you capped at two weeks or will you get more PTO after more years being there?
I get 5 weeks and couldn’t imagine getting less than 3 weeks at this point and would negotiate that as a minimum.

Think for yourself for once

Not worth it.

My current job is a 9-5 type of job but I'm on call 24/7. Probably get called 2 times a week on average after hours and on weekends. If I don't answer, there is a fallback person that can take it.
I take my computer with me on vacation and every day after work. They pay me what I consider a more than fair salary, but it would be nice to go away for a few days without having to check in. I don't mind too much because the 9-5 part is pretty flexible. I can come in and leave as I want. Plus we have "unlimited" PTO which is nice but very vague.
In the end, it isn't worth it to me to go find another job over. I'm married and don't have kids so I'm probably not the person who after hours work would bother.

I chose B. We had to make sacrifices but it is worth it.

I wouldn't take a pay cut to work fewer hours necessarily (though option A in your post sounds awful at that comp), but I'd take one to work the same amount in a less stressful role.

OP isn’t crafted well. There’s not enough gulf between the two options to get varied responses.
The question as written boils down to accepting 15k more in exchange for giving up your nights and weekends. Unless you hate your family and live for work, no rational person is picking A.
Now if A was 200k+ that would make it more interesting.

Does your wife work in this scenario, or am I expecting my family to live off of 75k in scenario 2?
