Will it ever get better?

You'd think it would because it appears to be mostly an effort thing, but... woof it's still bad.

He doesn't have the conditioning to play both sides and doesn't put forth the effort required on defense

Losing his man and not closing on an open three fast enough is conditioning and laziness.

Everything’s harder when you’re tired. It’s easy to give up when you’re tired

Fatigue makes cowards of them all

He is not fundamentally sound in aspect . That alone would improve his defense 75%. But it won’t happen .

This game was lost in the first half. They didn’t compete , got out worked , out rebounded , outplayed .

But the fact that we got out scored from 3, FT line, 2nd chances , and off turnovers , and still had a chance was mystifying .

What defense? He can't play 2 nights in a row because he's not in NBA shape!

Fatigue even effects your situational awareness. It contributes to many aspects that you wouldn’t think it does

The three worst +/- on the team tonight were Herb, Dyson, and Hawk. Their defense was well below the standard they have been playing at. Zion is an easy target but those three over helped and were out of position all night.

You're right, Zion's defense has been fine.

We'll always have that 4 game stretch post team meeting

That shite wore off real quick, as tonight's effort was arguably his worst all season on defense.

And being the only dude who got to rest last game then giving the least effort defensively, just inexcusable but here we are again.

Effort and conditioning driving the discussion still in year 5...

And now add a max contract to the equation.

So you've argued that Zion's defense had zero to do with the loss, but those dudes defense did?

This feels like an elaborate troll, those can't be 2 real takes.

Zion’s defense was bad. Zion is a below average defender. The worst part of his defense is close outs. You and other act like his conditioning is the reason. He was fine in LA two nights ago. It’s less conditioning and just where he is.

Yes, Herb, Dyson, and Hawkins were bad defensively tonight. Dyson was awful in the third quarter. He was constantly out of position and committed three fouls. Herb hasn’t been able to stay in the game over the last three because of fouls. Hawkins has been the target of opposing coaches four games in a row now. Herb and Dyson were incredible defensively during the homestand. Zion was below average. We were still winning. Zion had 26 pts on 16 shots with 7 assists tonight and a positive +/-. Those other guys did not contribute in the ways that they have to for us to win.

Generally, you expect more out of your best player who is also making way more than all 3 of those dudes combined.

And again, we're just taking about effort. Shouldn't be too much to ask for, but we just don't see it very often.

His propensity to run out to the perimeter and just be a cone once he gets out there is 100% laziness on his part.

I haven't seen Zion sprint full speed all season. He was passive at the end of the game bc he was 1. Completely gassed 2. Didn't want to get fouled and be at the line deciding the game.

It sucks. I never thought he would lose his peak athleticism this fast, but he just doesn't look the same.

I see a lot of defensive breakdowns. Pels getting beat off the dribble too much and they are cutting to the hoop as soon as the help moves to the rim.

I agree the effort has to be better, from both him and BI defensively. But this game in particular was lost because our guard and wing defenders were out of position constantly and we gave up 10 more 3’s than we made. The stats don’t lie. We lost the game when those three guys were in.

Kinda embarrassing when you sit for 2.5 mins of game time and can’t contest an open 3 after being back on the court for 1 game time minute… as someone who might be able to block that in peak condition.

Dude is a legit lane clogging threat but overall individual defensive effort and actual coaching fell off before he made it to middle school.
