If you’re the D-Coordinator, what would you have done different this year?

It’s been extremely frustrating for all of us, which seems to be common sense adjustments all year.
With that being said, this is what I would’ve changed.

-Harold Perkins obviously rushing more

-Weeks brothers would play over speights, greg penn too. Gregg Penn got the nod over Tolan last year. Didn’t understand why. Which cost us tolan.

-Toviano at more safety, Yaites at CB

-I would have gave the freshman more game experience earlier, rather than later.

-Defensive line and LB ALIGNMENT adjustment. We were out of position before the play even started this whole season.

-In game defensive adjustments. Alabama didnt beat lsu, they beat matt House. I dont even count this as a loss with how bad it was.

-Defense was so bad, i would’ve had a mental in-game defensive position battle.

-More D-Line rotation. I feel like we have the guys, don’t understand why we arent playing them or at least seeing how they respond to game action. It couldn’t have been any worser. We must have practice all-Americans that doesn’t show up and translate to the game.

-Would like to have seen #93, #52, #6, #29, #16, #21, #23, #33, #40 more this year

I would’ve tried to get my defense to play more defense for LSU than offense for the opponents.

I feel like our players lack defensive knowledge. They take bad angles and lots of time don’t know what to do.

ETA: I should say the SEEMINGLY don’t know what to do.

First thing that would have helped this team is to simplify the defense. Just let them line up and play loose.

I'm not a DC. Never have been. Never will be one. So I'm not qualified to give a good enough answer.

However....even with all of the above being true. I could have been the DC of this LSU team and still not have done a whole lot worse than House has this year. There is only so much room down that he can go at this point. So for a fraction of the cost, I could have done a fraction worse than he did. Or idk.. maybe copy a Madden defensive playbook and try to figure out some shite that works there, and done as good as House. Who knows.

After experiment had gone wrong and guys just were not getting it went to man and blitz a ton trying to get the ball out of qb hand in sun 3 seconds, would at least have gotten more picks and batted passes this way

I would have brought heat over and over again. When the offense is as good as ours has been, you are better off being highly aggressive

Blitz on 3rd down. Let Harold rush the passer. Rush more than 4, cause that seems to be the only thing we know how to do.

Yaites is not a CB. He got moved from cb to safety in high school because he can’t play cb.

On all the video breakdowns analysts keep saying it isn't the scheme it's execution. However, that is coaching. The scheme is far too complicated for our personnel and I think most college players. There is something wrong in that room. If you can't coach to your personnel that is a failure. The players can't understand it, are thinking too much and it makes them slow.
You play MTM and blitz, if we get burnt we get burnt. Our players aren't bad, not as bad as the overall defense we are putting out there.
We are getting beat by teams with less talent as well as the teams with equal or better. Being aggressive a d playing straight MTM would have not been any worse that what we put on the field. The worst is that BK is a defensive coach and it was bad last year and it got worse this year. Everyone is a problem.

Blitz the absolute frick out of everyone because you're not gonna stop them in man or zone coverage anyway.

In obvious passing down have to bring more than 4. More often than not 3-4 will not beat 5-6.

Used Perkins better, disguised blitz better, less of Mason more Jefferson, less Speights more Weeks… Essentially the opposite of everything House did this year.

I would have Perkins in the same role as last season. We would've started the season in a 4-3 and NEVER tried that 3-4. Since we've thoroughly proved we can RARELY get pressure with our front 4, I'd definitely have some calls where sometimes a corner or even safety comes with pressure. I'd definitely have more LB blitz packages. I would simplify it for the d-line and THOROUGHLY explain exactly what gap they are supposed to man AND teach me DE's not to rush past the QB. Man, there's just so much that this D is bad at, it's more than just a talent issue. These kids haven't been coached properly. This post could be 100 pages easily.
