These threads always end up being stupid arguments, and show who hasn't listened to any guitar based music from the last 20 years
I'll always say there is no "best" guitarist - the best one is whoever satisfies what you're looking for musically at that time
You can break it down musically or technically, answers all over the place
Guthrie Govan is about an objective of an answer there is, though
Tosin Abasi right up there too but his stuff isn't as easily digestible as Guthrie's

Technically it's probably Clapton.

Ry Cooder. But there is no one single greatest of all time.

And has been mentioned. I don’t disagree with your point, just saying today I are the conversation to where you are afraid it may go.
The question itself was not very focused- best to ever play? Best playing right now? Most influential?
It’s very true that the “correct” answer is inherently too subjective to actually be correct. But, relative popularity has to be factored into the equation.
Most people would pick someone out of the late 60s/early 70s era. And all those guys were in awe of Jimi. He’s never been my personal favorite but there is no doubt that his techniques have become part of the standard rock guitar vocabulary to this day. His most popular songs don’t really demonstrate his full playing ability. Would have been interesting if he ever had the opportunity to be a guitar player instead of a front man.
I tend to lean his way in these types of conversations, but as you say, the answer is usually to satisfy one’s own musical taste.

Jeff Beck, John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola

Christian Martin
Being that he invented the guitar, he was probably a virtuoso.

Mark Knopfler, Terry Kath, and Tommy Bolin have to be high up the list.

"Jeff Beck, John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola"
... thanks for mentioning McLaughlin, as I was about to post this. He is unsurpassed as a technical guitarist and does not like the limelight.

There can never be a “best guitarist”. There are many different styles and influencers that evolve every decade.

All the guys mentioned are/were fantastic. I can find something I like from each of them.
My vote would be for Lukather.
I’ve always been impressed by the way he could do sessions for Michael Jackson one day and The Tubes the next. Go from Boz Scaggs to Lionel Richie or Don Henley and be able to play what those artists and producers were looking for.

Nobody said "Tony Rice" yet?

I have no musical training so I have no idea who is the best technically. But just my two favorites are David Gilmore and Don Felder. Of course Pink Floyd and The Eagles are my two favorite bands all time.

Steve Howe/Trevor Rabin of YES and Ty Tabor of King’s X are very gifted players as is Doyle Dykes…

I couldn't agree more. My personal answer will always be Buckethead due to his wide range of styles, technical skill, and ability to put out music at an unbelievable pace. If you only know Buckethead for his shred playing, listen to songs like "Sail on Soothsayer", "Earth Heals Herself", and "Dawn at the Deuce" for just a small taste of what he's capable of.

I could understand that thought process. Although both are phenomenal.

It’s probably Guthrie Govan. Not even kidding.
He's not as famous, but he's has an unparalleled combination of technical proficiency and artistic tact. Most guitarists lose tact as they get more technical.

Jimi Hendrix is the best guitarist of all time.
Buckethead is like Rainman with the guitar.
But, this is such a subjective argument. There is no best, and no way to determine who was best. Probably dozens amongst genres that are all equal.

Stevie Gaines joins to the conversation. Possibly the best guitarist of Lynyrd Skynyrd. Possibly.
