We didn’t have any water in gueydan so I went with some family around Bayou Black. Had 3 limits both days. We shot well, wasn’t fast and furious. Mix of teal, whistlers and grey ducks. Heard spotty results from gueydan area. No geese in the area. All the ones that were there left.

Worst opener ever in 44 years in Venice for me.
Hunted three different places in Venice shot a combined four shells.
Thank God the fishing was good.

Hunted Bayou Black, didn't get limits on either day, but a nice mixed bag of a pintail, wood ducks (my sons first duck) , whistlers (plus a band), teal, and dogris. No ringnecks in my particular area but a boat load of dogris. Makes for some hard IDing and a total pain in the butt while we're only allowed 1pp

Buddy and I hunted Venice Saturday. 4 wigeon and 8 greys. Was a bit slower than previous years but still some ducks around. I don’t have high hopes for the rest of the season. Lack of feed is evident everywhere.

I’ve been hunting 30 something years and I still can’t Id them.

They are incredibly hard to distinguish in the first 20-30 mins of hunting time.
Ring Necks = Normal shaped bill with single white stripe, black backs on drakes, hens can sometimes have mostly white/lighter colored chins and necks like a deer.
Dogris/Scaup = Broad bright blue bill, gray backs on drakes, hens are all brown with white patches on front of cheeks when plumaged.
The hens are indistinguishable when not fully plumaged. The only true tell tale is the bill.
Drakes of both:
Hen Ringnecks:
Hen Dogris:

Mind if I ask how far south you went? I have been hearing the feed on the Refuge South of Raphael is almost non-existent. I was planning to hunt there Wed/Thursday but after what I saw closer to Venice I don’t think it is worth it.
We hunted around Venice proper Saturday am but the birds were so concentrated we had to join up groups. Hunted 8 people out of 2 mudboats bow to bow. We had really good cover but still had multiple flocks of Gray’s flair off right at the last second. I think that was the first and last time I hunt out of a 36’ plus blind down there. We ended up killing a typical Venice mixed bag of 38 but pulled the plug on hunting Sunday because the few birds we were sitting on got hammered all morning and afternoon by other groups.

I pirouge hunt. Two hunts off main pass one off south.
I would bet you hunt Baptiste it’s the only place I was aware of a few birds but I won’t hunt there anymore just way too many people it’s not worth it to me especially paddling in a pirouge.

Pretty rough in outer Delacroix, way down on grays, didn't see a teal of any kind. Did, however, see a lot of new birds arriving from north Saturday mid day and most of Sunday morning so hopeful for next weekend. There's no food, though.

I rode from Southeast Pass--to East Bay (all the way to Pilot town and across to Southwest)-- back up through Rapahel --into Main --and through to Baptiste.
The only concentrations of ducks i saw were on the North Side of Baptiste and some close to river by baptiste. (which are the only two places i saw feed).
All of the ponds south of Main Pass are mud bottoms full of white pelicans chasing mullet.
Be safe if you try to run South Pass--the dredge is sitting right in the mouth of it. (you need to approach it from the west side to go around behind it).

Opening weekend in SWLA was like this
Posted on 11/13/23 at 11:21 am to SOLA
Saturday near Holly Beach was about as slow as it gets. We have water but no feed to speak of. Low enough numbers we could count the birds we saw.
Sunday hunted in Johnson Bayou and did well. Mostly Teal.

Absolute clusterfrick for my crew in Venice this weekend. Didn’t get an opportunity to scout was slammed with work alll week. Ran to a spot in Baptiste that we normally smash them in and it was a ghost town. Maybe jumped 20 ducks total out of it. Went to move and my damn motor cut off and that was a wrap on hunting for the weekend blew a pump and waiting for replacement to get installed this week. Every single duck got ran out of there by opening day cuz of the amount of pressure from people “scouting” from sunup to sundown all week… Definitely the least amount of birds I’ve ever seen off Baptiste.

Another confirmation of what others are saying. Have a camp on Pass A Loutre. Feed is gone. What was left got wiped out by the tropical depression that brushed us and sent rain to Florida in October. Our dock was covered in mud indicating a small storm surge. Last couple trips have fished from southwest pass spillway all the way across to Blind Bay on east side. Sawdust Bayou had a little feed but other than there, haven't seen anything. There were 4 groups of youth in there on youth weekend. They were shooting, but I'm sure there were likely 10 groups in there this weekend. Will be fishing again this weekend. Not even bringing my duck stuff.

Hunted Bayou Black. Limits Saturday. Near limits Sunday. Was surprised by the lack of ringnecks. Youth/Veterans, we literally had thousands. Hardly saw any this weekend. Killed mostly teal and whistlers, with a couple grays and redhead mixed in.

quote:It's astonishing really. Like you said, the youth weekend was loaded, then it wasn't. There are some very concentrated flocks of them, particularly back by the ICW. I'm smack in the middle and its all dogs. Zero ringers killed by me or others near me. But have several confirmed reports of them killed on the Mandalay and west near the Antill. They'll show up in a couple weeks when the full moon hits. Right as the first split winds down

Significant reduction in teal where I am also. We killed 3 all weekend and only seeing singles, doubles, and a couple small flocks here and there. No big groups like last weekend either. But no doubt there are still plenty BW left in other areas of Bayou Black

Delacroix was slow Saturday morning. Killed on teal, missed a dos gris. That’s it. Didn’t see too many birds flying. Talked to 8 other boats at the launch and they only had 1-2 ducks and some zeroed.

Hunted rice fields in Roanoke. Bagged a limit within a hour. Few teal, grey ducks and spoons.

Dularge area sat had a fairly decent amount of birds around. One blind had a two man limit. Couple of greys, a dos gris and the rest teal. Know about 5 or 6 other blinds who were in the 12 to 15 range, again mostly teal with a few greys mixed in. Sunday had far fewer birds. We killed 12 with 4 greys the rest BWT. Same other blinds had far fewer ducks than Saturday. Feed is hard to come by, and few grey ducks around is bad news for us. Very surprised at the numbers of BWT this late or early depending on how you look at it. But they wont stick around long...
