I ask because I know they are so rare. Almost stepped on this this past weekend in central Texas.

Definitely. God makes absolutely amazing creatures. I have never seen a coral snake. Although they are the only neurotoxin snake in North America, they don't have pit viper fangs so they can't deliver much of it in a strike, you have to be fricking around with it at a level 10 to find out about it. Or so I've read.

Awesome find, awesome pics.

coloring seems right for a Coral.

They are usually pretty small and I can't scale it from the picture.

Red next to yella will kill a fella.

Red next to black is a friend of jack.

That’s how I’ve always remembered it.

Ole Bama baw picked one up a few years ago and was paralyzed and fighting for his life. Never saw if he made it.

I had the pleasure of seeing one in the forest in east Texas. Much smaller than the op but they are really pretty snakes. After seeing the snake, the mouth looked like the size of a garden snake.

I seen two in my life.

You basically have to be holding them and they have to bite you around some loose skin such as the area between your fingers.

Yep, I’ve seen 4 in the 2 years since we bought property west of Tomball, and about 15 copperheads in that same span. I saw a big king snake earlier today, only the second one of those I’ve seen unfortunately.

Black on red will kill you dead
Black on yellow is a harmless fellow.

I'm colorblind so none of it makes sense anyway.

Yep, beautifull creatures. Never seen one in all my years.

But then again, I walked a wet valley on my land for 2 years and never saw a snake and the dozer man building my pond killed over a dozen cottomouths...good eyes are important!

I had a snake expert tell me recently that the "red and yellow kill a fellow" rhyme isn't always accurate. There are variations of colors that coral snakes can have. Some where the red is almost non-existent and some where the yellow is extremely faint. there are also some non-venomous snakes that have red and yellow touching.
myths

I'm not going to be picking up any colorful snakes anytime soon
