Brian Kelly just publicly said in his press conference that he has seen the type of progress that he wants to see on the defensive side of the ball. He even reiterated that the defense is improving at the end. Also his answers about spying the quarterback absolutely sucked as well.

It’s coach speak. He has to keep the locker room together to finish out the season. He can’t, and won’t, call out players/coaches directly to the media.

Once the season is over, we’ll see the truth.

He used the Auburn and Army games as examples as if we are supposed to be encouraged by those games.

We lost the game. We were up 28-31 in the 3rd. It’s sucks. There is no magical combination of words Kelly could string together in any magical order that could make the loss suck any less. Quit crying about his press conference answers. What happened on the field is all that matters and speaks/spoke for itself.

No, that’s different than coach speak. You don’t openly say that you are pleased with the defensive progression when they aren’t improving at all. He doesn’t have to say that he is going to fire house after the year, but to say that you are happy with how the defensive is improving at this point makes him look like an arse.

It’s truly insane how these people melt over hollow words at a press conference. He can’t shite over people he employees and the players so he’s going to be as positive and generic as he can be.

Just like literally every single coach that has these stupid things. The only valuable stuff from these are injury updates

cut the shite man. He's trying to keep his team galvanized for the home stretch and have a 10 win season. Throwing shade at his players or DC is not gonna make things better. He knows what needs to be done. Pacifying you and media is not his priority. you got coach speak. that's all you should expect

I’m not saying he should shite on the players and coaches. He doesn’t have to specifically say that he is happy with how the defense is improving when it obviously isn’t. He went out of his way to say that on two separate occasions.

It’s generic shite in front of the press man who cares.

You genuinely think that’s how he feels in his meetings with the other coaches? Come on

Maybe not, but he can't fail to see the benefit of starting the process now (instead of waiting). USC - who also had a Heisman candidate at QB - has already made the hard choice.

He doesn't have to trash House in the media, but it would behoove him to make the move now in a classy way (like "thank you for your service, but we're going in a different direction" type of announcement).

I was encouraged, but I was discouraged about last Saturday night.

Very poor performance, very poor plan, very poor adjustments.

He did not “go out of his way” so say that.

In fact, in one of the responses he danced around the question by talking about the progress he’s seen with some of the younger players rather than defensive performance as a whole. And in the other response he added that he would obviously like to see more.

It was 100% coach speak.

There are a handful of posters here looking for soundbites to complain about every. single. time. he goes to the podium.

The fact that Lincoln Riley made that decision does not mean he made the right decision. It could just as easily be framed as a reactionary move under pressure from boosters that might hurt his team more than it helps (compared to waiting until December) in the long run.

He absolutely did. There was no reason to say that. And there was no reason to reiterate it right before he left the podium. Look he can say whatever he wants. But when he says stuff like that, it makes him look foolish as if the fans don’t know what they are watching. He can keep talking about how happy he is with the progress of the defense, and I’m going to keep saying that’s a dumb and unnecessary thing to say.

They did progress after the Ole Miss game. Tackling was better and the D was better overall.
Then we play another top 10 team and we get exposed all over again.

You had two stops in a game. Two. I am sorry. I dont think getting the D up and ready for the Independence Bowl counts.

This. In order to get to 10 wins, he must do and say what he can to keep the players as motivated as possible; throwing them under the bus very publicly does nothing for the program.
