Metallica is known as a heavy metal band. They do heavy shite as a young band,..bass player dies, they revamp. Late 80s/90s go pop metal.... But James never gets credit for how great of a writer and singer he is. Dude shreds. Plays a lot of the leads in their songs where you think Hammett is playing but also sing almost everything. Even live no backup singers. Dude is underrated.

I think he gets proper credit. Metallica is the biggest metal band of all time and he either wrote or co wrote nearly every song of theirs. He's obviously extremely talented.

I think Metallica gets credit. But James as a musician and writer doesn't get the credkck.

Nah man, he only plays the solo on NEM and the first MOP solo.
Just left the show in St Louis and watched him do it.
I think he gets the proper amount of credit. Everyone and anyone in the business looks up to him.

Weird Al Yankovich.
Everyone’s opinion of him is a cheesey goofy song parody guy.
But he’s an extremely accomplished and impressive accordion player and his original songs are all fantastic as are his polkas

Not to Purple Rain on your parade but didn’t Prince play every instrument on his albums?

Metal is still looked down on. Among people who liked metal he gets credit. I think.
Now metal is struggling as a genre. Many bands out there but no one stands out since the early 2000’s. Lots of bands with a good song or two, or who only lasted 5 years or so, or you hear a song that reminds you and realize “damn that was 2006!”
So the genre is struggling.
But they are The Rolling Stones of metal. He gets credit for that IMO. He’s just a guitarist in a two guitar band.

Well that's certainly a take.

Meaning he will always be seen as just the rhythm guitarist. No matter what riffs are his and what ability he has.

Forget metal, Metallica is one of the biggest American rock bands of all time. The Eagles and maybe Fleetwood Mac are the only ones bigger. Forty years into their career and they're selling out giant stadiums multiple nights in a row, even The Eagles aren't doing that. Hetfield is largely responsible for their success.

If you mean no one is as popular as Metallica, then yes but that's probably never gonna happen again. The underground is alive and well.

His work on Suicide and Redemption is pretty solo-ish and is similarly tear-inducing.

I agree. It’s like metal became main stream. It’s not anymore. It had its window with hair metal and Metallica gave it legitimacy as a whole. They were/are true metal and were Speed Metal.

He gets his credit. He's widely regarded as maybe one of the best rhythm down pickers of all time.
