Does anyone have a Sodastream?

I really like sparking water but I don't like going through so many bottles and cans. Does anyone use one of these? How does it taste and is it more economical than buying the cans/bottles?

My friend uses it and loves his. He used it to curb his soda appetite because it provides that carbonation texture to whatever he's drinking.

I love carbonated water and other carbonated drinks. I have a home carbonation rig similar to this:
You can put one together and then have little ongoing expense. You can get a 5 lb tank. Get it filled at a welding supply store for about $10 and it will last a couple of years.
Blog about how to do it.

I used to have one but we lost it when moving stuff out/back in during a kitchen remodel. I really liked it. I didn't care for the flavor packs it came with and would just buy lemons/limes to flavor the water. I would carbonate that shite so much you could hardly even take a sip before burping. I'm going to have to replace it now that this thread reminded me of it

I use my homebrew kegerator for sparkling water. It's essentially a bigger version of Stadium rat's setup. One thing I've found is that you want to get your water chemistry right. You can look up some water profiles to build up from RO water. BR water is pretty tasty, but pretty soft. A lot of your commercial sparkling waters are very hard with high bicarbonates and calcium. Those minerals plus carbonation will give you that crisp feel you're looking for. If you just carb straight BR tap water, it's going to feel and taste off.

Thanks, Rat. That is fantastic! I may have to go that route. I don't mind the upfront cost but from what I was looking at the refill cannisters for the sodastream on Amazon were not really cheaper than just buying sparkling water bottles.

This is correct the sodastream system is a very expensive commodity for what it is, which is basically just for retail consumers.

I’ve had one for 3 years, only for water and I use it every day. Topo Chico quality at home and super convenient. (I wouldn’t want the DIY contraption)

This is what I do. This is the recipe I use and its pretty good. Topo Chico Clone. I would look at Morebeer.com and buy as many of the minerals you need there as its much cheaper than buying them on Amazon. I do have to buy a couple of minerals off amazon.

We've had it for a while now, no flavorings just straight water.
Love it, we would go through cases of seltzer water.
Now I have five canisters and when four are empty, I order four from soda stream, they arrive and I put the four empties into the box and mail it back to them

I bought it to make sparkling water as well. I find that the plain water is substandard compared to Pelligrino and Topo Chico. That being said, I fell in love with crystal light lemonade with carbonation. I am not ashamed to say that I am firmly addicted to carbonated sugar free lemonade.

Probably a stupid question but where do you get the flavored syrups and such to make sodas and how do you do this with this set up?

Just bought one. Don't like it. Want it?

You can get them at Amazon, Walmart, etc.. They also just came out with Pepsi. Flavorings are added after you carbonate the water.

Sure, where are you?

Wife bought the more uppidy one with metal trim and glass bottles. Dont know what the deal is but its damn difficult to get it really carbed up now. I even tried taking it apart to replace the gasket that seals the bottle (side note, don't do that, they very much don't male them to be repaired. On the plus side they still sent me a warranty replacement even though all I had by then was a butchered and completely broken one). But yeah even with a whole new machine we still struggle to get it to carb up a lot for some reason.

The syrups for Sodastream are expensive. I'd have to buy a big box of Coke Zero syrup at Sam's. That would last forever.

I have one that I used to use a good bit. I bought the adapter on Amazon and got the paintball tanks filled at Dicks or Academy for cheap. I think it was like $3 to fill one rather than pay $15 for a Sodastream canister. This was back when I was still drinking alcohol and I could make my mixers stronger or weaker by how much of the syrup I used. I'd get the syrups at Bed Bath and Beyond with the multiple coupons they mail out. I think it was $8 for a syrup at the time, and it would make about 10-12 liters. You could also make it really carbonated. My wife was drinking Lacroix a good bit, and I bought some powdered lime and a cherry extract to make a cherry lime-aid for her. One packet of powder in her glass and top it with the carbonated cherry water.
