re: Was Troy Aikman overrated?

No, he is rated about right by the public but he shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame. But their are a ton of players in there that shouldn't be.

I went to the games, watched the games, and find the Aikman questions absurd.
Here is what I saw:
He was tough as nails. Brutally beaten up before he had a line.
He was extremely accurate on all types of passes and had a strong arm.
He could run when necessary. His 40 time is 4.75. Mahomes is 4.8.
He could read defenses.
He played biggest in the big games.
Amongst a bunch of hell raisers who often ran into trouble with the law, he never did. High character and leadership.
He demanded coaches and players be accountable.
is he top 10 all time? Probably just outside IMO around 12-15.
Could he have taken an average team to the Super Bowl like Elway or Brady? I don't know about that as it's a very short list.

Also, passing yards and touchdowns shouldn’t be the only criteria, but it is…..no way to measure the immeasurables. Checking out of plays, understanding defenses, setting those guys up for HOF numbers. He was the distributor . He was the leader of the team.

Those 40 numbers surprised me!

It helps when you have an elite OL and Emmittt smith.

Who has also been called "overrated"

He compares favorably with Eli Manning.
But due to old school football assessments, a QB gets praised for team accomplishments in a way that no other player on those teams are assessed. He’s over-rated because of the position he played.

If you are old enough to have watched him play then you know he was a great qb. If you just look up regular season passing statistics and conveniently ignore Super Bowl and playoff wins and playoff statistics....and write all of that success off to having a great team around him, you will consider him overrated.
If he was in his prime and playing right now only Mahomes would be more coveted by NFL general managers.

Was very average. I’d compare him to Harbagh/ testeverde/ Kosar/ ….w a better supporting cast

it is not fair to compare QB stats of that era to the modern "don't hit the QB or the receivers" era?
Teams tried to knock QB's out of games. Aikman had to retire because of the number of concussions he had while playing.
One of Aikman's concussion hits on YouTube
Another Aikman concussion on YouTube These announcers never even mention how hard his head hits the turf and concrete under it. It took the sport years to figure out slamming a guy's head on to padded concrete did as much harm as helmet to helmet contact.
Make no mistake about intent here. Defenders were trying to knock skill position guys out of games. In 2007 LSU's defense knocked the starting QB's out of their 1st three or four games. It's just the way the game was played.
A lot of safeties used to not be able to cover any WR's. They just timed their diving hits to coincide with the ball getting there.
Safety of the 90'a: Steve Atwater 6'3" 230lbs. See the 2nd play on his highlights and a few more on YouTube. No penalties were called because those hits were legal. Look at those big ole shoulder pads. He came to hit, not cover WR's.
Modern safety Tyrann Mathieu 5'9" 190 lbs.

Funny how every player on those 90’s cowboys teams was overrated
So how did they win all those super bowls with all those overrated players?

To be fair, his playoff stats are a little higher than what the OP posted.

I bet his body count is insanely high. I'll guess over 5k.

IMHO yes - not that he was a bad QB, but had he played almost anywhere but in Dallas with that loaded roster I doubt very seriously he's in the HOF.

It’s often a favorite American pastime to tear down/belittle the accomplishments of others. Just a weird feature in our society.
I would imagine any of the actual Cowboys players of that era would look at some football fan asking this question like he/she was nuts.
Aikman was a hellaciously accurate passer. An absolute competitor and virtual coach on the field. He was exactly the type of QB and most especially the type of leader that that particular Cowboys team needed to function at the level they did and win.

I don't remember Aikman screwing up in the playoffs. He always seemed pretty safe and reliable.
