This was unexpected. I know in the past they always argued for both "sides" but lately they've been in favor of discriminating against Asians so I figured they were completely captured and weaponized.

quote:

The American Civil Liberties Union and its Washington, DC, chapter filed an amicus brief in support of Donald Trump on Wednesday, arguing that the gag order against the former president in his federal election subversion case is unconstitutional.

The brief contends that the order issued by Judge Tanya Chutkan earlier this month, which limits what Trump can say about special counsel Jack Smith’s prosecution of his alleged attempt to overturn the 2020 election results, violates the 2024 GOP front-runner’s First Amendment rights.

The préamble of how terrible they think Trump is was actually longer than the explanation for why they think his free speech is being violated

“Just to clarify the ACLU considers Trump to be literally Hitler and a threat to decency and democracy the world over. He is dangerous to everyone on the planet and should be found guilty of the charges brought against him. With that said…”

That would be a consistent position for them. The problem is that they are not always consistent

Ok...quick question...how do they have "standing" to file this?

All the election cases thrown out for "not having standing" kinda left things a bit confusing.

Zionist order controls the terrorists it’s an old game. Otherwise why wouldn’t all those Islamic nations just get rid of Israel there’s like 15 of them

What’s the ACLU angle here?

“We hate Trump but need him back?”

“Political speech is protected speech?

They’re spot on. But did anyone see this coming? First Johnson. Now this.

Maybe there’s hope for this god-forsaken country after all.

Maybe.

I'm guessing the ACLU put together the worst argument possible and intentionally wants to 'lose' here. This is just so they can say "look we're not biased" yet we all know they are biased.

The ACLU isn't filing a law suit. They sent their opinion to the court that states they do not support the gag order. The court can ignore it if they want. If they wanted to they could offer Trump legal services to the person that has standing, but my guess is that he can afford his own lawyers.

The entire idea that the state can tell a person that the state is trying to imprison that they have to just shut up and take it is hilarious and that any normal person in America thinks that's a grand idea just because of TDS is just pathetic.

Free publicity and for future reference when they are challenged for being biased.

Like their cases or not, the ACLU is awesome. Rights apply to all citizens, if you start picking and choosing, we no longer have rights.

Kind of along the same lines, ACLU has lost a lot of standing in the last couple years and possibly thinks this could get them back on their feet since their typical supporters are devolving into full fledged totalitarianism.
