Willie Green: We have not installed any Zion half court sets yet

Willie Green on Zion having 1 shot attempt at half: “We need to talk about it. We have to get the ball in his hands. Hadn’t put any sort of half-court sets in yet for him. But we need to put the ball in his hands. We know that. That’s something we will continue to do."
Less than 2 weeks to the start of the season and you haven’t gotten to the point of installing plays for your best player?
This team needs to get off their high horse of Ingram handling the ball, Zion has shown that he’s clearly far superior as the main ball handler. This is setting up for failure.

They did the same thing last year. They hid Zion away in the post the first 10-12 games and let Ingram run roughshod. When it was clear that wasn’t good enough they started using Point Zion and shot up to the top of the West.

Ingram just doesn’t fit.
Zion needs a Klay Thompson or Jaylen Brown type wing. Low dribble but high percentage shooter who can guard 1-4’s.

I have been screaming this since media day when all we heard was “BI will be the engine of the offense and the primary ball handler. We want to explore Zion off ball and as a screener.”
We have lived this experiment already. Last night was a preseason game and meant absolutely nothing. However, the reason last night happened is concerning. It’s like they just can’t figure it out.

It'll always be in our best interest to have the ball in Zion's hands as much as possible.

Maybe you have to let Borrego learn it on his own like Willie did last year. Hopefully he learns faster. What doesn’t make sense to me is Zion has absurd gravity. Give him the ball near the basket and he moves 3-5 defenders. How do you not have him touch the ball every time down the court just to move the defense for other players?

The question that has to be asked is, did they figure it out last year or was it forced because BI was out with the toe? It seems obvious that the team took off when Z became the primary driver of the offense. But everything since BI has returned (granted, Z was out) and everything this preseason has been about BI being the primary driver of the offense. I will never understand it.

This is the most concerning part.
Last season they found out it doesn’t work, but hey new season lets try it again. It’s like a kid that goes to class everyday and forgot what they learned the day before so you have to start over with them.
Stan learned before the first preseason game that the key to this team is Zion, I don’t know why 3 years later we are still trying to make Ingram the focus. You can be a leader without being the primary ball handler.

Kind of glad they had a horrific game like this. It’s better to have it in preseason game 2. Work on things. Know what has failed and work on it before the season starts.
At least that’s what a smart team does when you fail like this.

I think Willie hasn't installed it yet, but the pels know how to run it
Point Z is the best version of this team. Why run it ad nauseum in the pre season if we know it works?
Still feel we were just working on specific things last night.

Exactly. They are professional basketball players. That can be “installed” in a couple practices.

It was against the Rockets though, who are supposed to be one of the worst teams in the league. We shouldn't be blown out by 30+, even in preseason.
My primary concern and the key to our season is Ingram and Zion. Can they coexist? I watched an interview with Austin Rivers and he talked about how Towns and Edwards are not close. They never practice together during the offseason. They never develop any chemistry. How many good 1-2 punches are like that?
Will we ever see that with Zion/Ingram? Where they embrace each other and can play off one another. Without that, we are always going to be limited..

The Rockets have a much better roster now and in the future than the Pelicans.
They lost a lot of close games last year. That won’t happen as much as their young players get more experience, coupled with their new, excellent head coach and 2 Wiley Vet FA additions.
We are going to get our arse kicked a lot this season unless Zion plays a lot of games at a high level.

Lmao. The rockets do not have a better roster than the Pelicans. That’s crazy talk.

That's a good example. Everyone seems to play better with Jokic though, he elevates everyone around him. But you are right. I'm not sure how much they practice or train together outside team activities..

You don't have to practice Point Zion, you just have to find the open spot and wait.

The Willie quote doesn't sound good, and maybe it isn't.
But when something seems so obviously bad, there's generally a reason for that, and it's probably not that Willie just completely forgot or neglected Zion plays to the detriment of the team.
