In the event of a tie for the division championship, the following procedures will be used to break all ties to determine the SEC Football Championship Game representative. All Conference versus Conference Games (both division and non-division) will be counted in the Conference Standings.

Technically, both schools are tied for the division championship and LSU won the tie-breaker to be the SECCG representative.

…and LSU was ranked higher. Reason I say this is in 1988, LSU and Auburn both finished the season w/1 SEC loss. LSU beat Auburn head to head (earthquake game), but the tiebreaker went to whoever had the higher ranking. Auburn did and was considered the “true” champion, ultimately going to the sugar bowl.

It's even funnier when you realize that in 2003 the SEC East had a 3-way tiebreaker (something that hasn't happened in either division since 2003) and that neither Tennessee nor Florida claim the East title with Georgia.

So how do they even have an argument to claim co-champs of the West?

Because the teams were co-champs. LSU went to the SEC championship game based on the first tiebreaker which was head to head.

The SEC recognizes all team that finish with the best record in the division as the division champion. It’s the same as being the co champ in basketball or baseball but the team that wins the tiebreaker is the higher seed in the SEC tournament.

I don't know any Ole Miss fans who like that they have the banner up in the stadium. True the SEC office does send all 1st place winners a trophy which they did receive. The only people it seems to bother is LSU fans which might be why they put it up. We won the national title....who cares about the dumb banner in their stadium?

This isn’t the same situation. First of all LSU still claims the SEC Championship in 1988 because they were co champions.

Bowl games are invites so the sugar bowl decided they would rather Auburn who was 10-2 over an 8-4 LSU team which makes sense.

For the SEC championship it isn’t an invite it is based off the SEC record then tiebreakers.

Technically last year LSU and Alabama were SEC west co champs but neither team is going to make a sign for becoming division co champs.

They don’t claim co champs. They claim champs.

Read the banner. They claim that they are champions in 2003. Nothing about co.

True that. But for purposes of this thread, the reference continues to be co champs. Ole miss doesn’t claim that. They are the champions. Period.

It’s like the three National Championships they claim which none are from the AP or UPI, the recognized polls at the time…

Ole Miss claiming the 2003 SEC West
quote:
Being ranked #1 is not a good argument?

They didn't play in the National Title game which had been decided on ahead of time as the standard to crown a champion

So yea, not a good argument.

This is what baffles me. If Oklahoma would have beat us 21-14 and not the other way around the AP would have voted them #1. Why the hate? The AP hates LSU? I thought it was ESPN that hated LSU? What’d we ever do to the AP?

That banner has been hanging in the stadium for a long time. They should be embarrassed.

They are honoring the 03 team Saturday which should give our fans plenty opportunities for heckling, especially when Manning is announced.

They can claim it all they want; it's within their rights.

However, it does not change the reality of their location in the pecking order...
