If I remember right, all we had to do was kick a FG to win

Clocking it with no time left turned out to be a bad move

And the Tigers were within FG range on the Ole Miss 32 yard line with a first down with less than a minute to go. The four plays which followed can be attributed to pure Les Miles idiocy.

Did Jefferson take 3 straight sacks or something? I don’t remember much but I’m pretty sure that last pass to Tolliver was like 50 yards, unless I’m confused on that as well

Three straight sacks followed by a 50 yard pass to the Ole Miss 5, one second left. No time left to "spike the ball." At least they could have lined up and attempted a FG then; don't think that was possible either but it wouldn't have been an idiotic play after the four previous plays.

It was quite the scene for sure. I was there unfortunately.

Exciting ending tho, we got the onside kick that gave us a chance to win.

Just looked up the box score, Jasper had already hit from 50 that night. Why we didn’t run it 3 times and kick the roughly 45 yarder only Les knows

Also of note, Les let the clock run down either arguing with Crowton over the play call or to set up the Hail Mary as the final play. Didn’t even consider it being caught short of the end zone.

That was the beginning of the end of the Les Miles regime. I know he had some success the next two years, but the die was cast, and clock management became an ongoing concern with Miles on the sideline.

You inspired me to look up the ending of that game (glutton for punishment ) and found this gem:

Only time I’ve been to Vaught-Hemingway. I normally don’t drink a bunch of bourbon after the game. I did that night.

I drank an entire fifth of Jack Daniels that night. It was just sickening.

The game that probably confirmed to Gary and Verne what an idiot Les Miles was after having suspicions of Les after a 2 loss title team with all that talent and losing to 2 teams they ad no business losing to.

Verne and Gary were yelling run on fg team, but unless I missed something they wouldn’t have time for that. The only thing you could do is snap it and try to throw or run for a td.

This is why Les is on that list of the worst 5 coaches to win a championship

Les Miles is famous for clock management snafus, but that one was in a class by itself.

The worst part of all of this is, and it’s been a while and I’ve tried to block it out so I could have some details wrong. I remember it being 4th and a mile, and here’s the best part, Les runs down the clock to like 7 seconds on the game clock and calls a time out. So in reality, if he calls a freaking timeout way sooner, the pass gets completed and you can run the fg team out with ease to drill the game winner. Still one of the stupidest things I’ve ever seen a coach do.
