The cheapest Weber Summit will run him about $1250
Won’t argue this. But you’ll get a better built, better insulated pit that will probably last twice as long.
A garden variety Weber Kettle will last forever. People hold onto them for decades. All you have to do is keep it covered. It's that simple
I'll bet if the OP only purchased the two things listed below for his Kettle, the results and ease at controlling temperatures would rival your Summit and I know how well Summits cook. They cook just as well as any ceramic komado and probably cooks just as well as the ceramic cooker I recently got rid of.

I won’t argue any of your points, because they are good ones. I’d only invite you to take a hands-on look at the summit Kamado. It’s like your kettle but next level. The insulation rivals any of those ceramic cookers. It’s sturdier and comes standard at 24” for more cooking space.

Get a Weber 22 (or 26 if you really need the space) and a Spider Venom fan attachment.
You’ll have a great charcoal/wood grill and smoker that is stupid easy to use. I have a 22 and can cook anything on it at whatever temp I want for as long as I want.

I can get my kettle to over 700 easy with the venom. I did buy the gasket tape you mention and it works amazingly well.
I like my $300 grill/smoker that runs on wood and air.
I’ve done briskets and plenty pork butts and the temp holds rock steady. Longest cook has been 270 degrees for 17 hours. B&B coals and hardwood. Never refueled the 22.

I've seen them, they're terrific. They really are but they're ridiculously overpriced for an enamel coated grill (same coating as the kettle) and something that's air insulated. I think the Broil King Keg and Akorn (two other steel cookers) are both fiber insulated.
Also, the Summit actually borrows a fair amount of features from the kettle. They're closer to the Kettle in terms of features than folks realize.
The Summits are sexy for sure but holy shite they're expensive for what you get.

I'm a bit of a purist but I'm also a weber junky. I really need to get one of those.

I get that 100%. But going to sleep for 9 hours and knowing my fire will hold steady is worth more than the satisfaction of watching a fire all night at my age.
But again, I get it.

Weber Summit Kamado
The answer.
That is what I have (well, the earlier Weber Summit Charcoal actually) so I’m partial to it and is why I recommended it. Great Kamado-style grill.

Weber Kettles will last a lifetime. And I’ve had no issues with insulation being a problem. But I live in south Louisiana. I’m a member of a couple Weber Kettle forums. And people definitely put their grills away in the winter way up north.
But down here, there’s nothing I can’t smoke on my kettle with a snake and the Venom.

You do you baw. But the snake is not the preferred smoking method for everyone.

Of course. I’m not suggesting otherwise. I’m just doing me and giving my insight and recommendation to the OP.
Maybe down the road I’ll get a giant offset and spend days on end in front of it. It seems nice. Just isn’t a realistic fit for me right now.
And I don’t have enough friends to warrant it anyway.

I have a stick smoker and I don’t have to do this. You get what you pay for.

And I’m happy with what I paid for and got.

I have no experience with offset smokers. Can you grill on one of those?

Weber Summit Kamado
I have owned a couple of Weber gas grills and have always liked them. Thinking this is the way to go.

Lots of great advice, thanks. A lot of people have good things to say about the Weber Summit Komodo. Expensive, but I plan on using the grill a lot for a long time. So I suppose that is what I am going to do.
I will look into this Spider Venom thing for later.

If you want a combo grill/smoker I would say Kamado or Oklahoma Joe.
I have the Primo Kamado. It's made in the US and it is an oval so you can get a brisket on there easier. I believe they are the only ones that make an oval and the extra grill space is nice.
The only downside to charcoal is the time to get things started and to temp if grilling. But the flavor is great and it does a good job with smoking as well. You just have to sneak up on the temp or get an automated temp controller.
So with a Kamado, you are over $1000 to $1500 with stands. It just depends on the budget and the space. For a charcoal combo grill smoker, it is hard to go wrong with a Kamado type.

They are good cookers, just not what I need/want at the moment. I added a couple holes to mine to run a rotisserie through it, chicken comes out great. I like having dedicated smokers/grills, I really want a yakitori grill to pair with my kettle and my 500.
Gotcha. I'd love to have one, but couldn't justify spending what they cost.

I’m not sure what they cost now. I have a 3/4 box from a few years ago.
