Lots of great advice, thanks. A lot of people have good things to say about the Weber Summit Komodo. Expensive, but I plan on using the grill a lot for a long time. So I suppose that is what I am going to do.

I will look into this Spider Venom thing for later.

If you're going komado, then consider the Primo XL above the Summit.

Oh and just an FYI. Double check and make sure the Venom would fit the Summit. It may not.

One other thing. The Slow n Sear is a great option on the Weber Kettle and I believe they make one for the Summitt, as well.

It sets up for two zone cooking, and you can use it for low and slow cooks, as well. It never leaves my kettle.

I disagree. I have a ceramic cooker and wish I would have bought the summit Kamado. The ceramics are extremely heavy and fragile. I know of two people who shattered their ceramics when they tipped over while moving them. $1500 gone in the blink of an eye.

I love my Primo XL.... wick was the king getting those for cost. The oval surface wipes the floor with anything circle. Im shocked other havent learned this. BUT the one thing i do hate it the aftermarket accessory market for Primo is basically non existent. Kamado Joe is the king there. it would be hard not to go Kamado Joe route, if i had to get another.

The grill was a built in so leaving it was just the same as leaving my range and oven.

I suppose I could have taken the smoker but it was old and there wasn't much sense in transporting it cross-country.

Well first of all, he doesn't need all that stuff. That's just stuff that I have and secondly, even if he bought all that shite plus a $200 Weber kettle, he's only 740 bones in the hole.

The cheapest Weber Summit will run him about $1250.

I cooked on a weber kettle with a SNS and a bunch of other gadgets through the years and it was good, but I added a Weber Summit Kamado to my arsenal a few years back and it blows the kettle out of the water right out of the box. The Weber Summmit Kamado is a kettle on steroids and is just superior in every way. Love mine and it will probably last me the rest of my life.

I've seen them, they're terrific. They really are but they're ridiculously overpriced for an enamel coated grill (same coating as the kettle) and something that's air insulated. I think the Broil King Keg and Akorn (two other steel cookers) are both fiber insulated.

I feel air insulated metal is actually better than ceramic and fiber insulated metal. The air insulation doesn't make the fire smolder as much and it still is very efficient and easy to control temps.

Also, the Summit actually borrows a fair amount of features from the kettle. They're closer to the Kettle in terms of features than folks realize.

The Summit borrows the ash cleaning sweeps from the kettle and that is about it. The Weber Summit Kamado has a great hinged lid, steel braided lid gasket, 24 inches of cooking space compared to 22 (makes a pretty big difference), a metal diffuser, air insulated double walled metal, and an adjustable charcoal grate. It is superior to the kettle in just about every way.

The Summits are sexy for sure but holy shite they're expensive for what you get.

Compare the Weber Summit Kamado and price out of the box to what you get for the price of a BGE or KJ out of the box. I think the Weber Summit Kamado might be a better value than the BGE and KJ because it already comes with a "nest" and a diffuser out of the box.

Not even sure the Summit needs a temp controller. I haven't used a temp controller on mine since I've owned and can maintain 225-250 for hours on end with no babysitting at all. I go to sleep all the time and wake up and it is still within range of my target temp. Once it is locked in, it doesn't budge at all.

I have the first generation summit with the table. Got lucky and found it new in box for $1,100 on marketplace. Have had it for two years now.

Get a Weber 22 (or 26 if you really need the space)

I'd strongly urge the OP to get the 26" if he's planning to smoke full packer briskets.

I have the 22 and 26 and the bigger size is so much easier to deal with a big brisket. also can get more ribs on at the same time.

if just doing smaller cooks like a pork butt or brisket flat, 22 is perfect.

You can spend a lot or little..
I have a few Traegers … cause I got lazy and empty nester..

But back when I wanted to hang in the yard with friends.. drink beer and smoke food there is no reason to spend more than you would at tractor supply and get a chargriller with gas.. charcoal.. and offset..
I used it a lot for ten years and left it in working condition when I sold my house and moved
