Seems like lots of people say they want to be or always wished they could have become a marine biologist but I've never actually met one.

that's because once they get into that curriculum and realize there's no money to be made in that field they usually switch majors

I always wanted to be one. Fun fact, my first two managers (two separate companies) out of college were both former marine biologist.

Nope, but I always wanted to pretend to be an architect, though.

only knew one guy that saw it through to PhD, he knew there wasn't any decent money in the field but he wanted to be a college prof and was happy with that

My undergrad degree had some folks in it that wanted to become marine biologists.

Let me tell you they definitely all fit a certain stereotype, they loved hugging their whales and saving the turtles

I started out as a Marine Biologist but ended up as a Latex salesman for Vandelay Industries.

My son was in the high school quiz bowl in Lafayette in the late 1970s. The moderator asked him his future plans and he replied he planed to enroll at the University of Miami to study Marine Biology. He had no such intentions. He was going to Baylor to study history.

I went to college with some. A handful are scuba instructors living that island life now. I don’t think they make any money but there are worse ways to go thru life I guess.

Because for every hour diving with the manatees you spend dozens of hours in the lab staring at columns of numbers.

My sister (no pics) volunteers with a marine research organization in the PNW. She doesn't get paid but she gets to do the fun stuff without the drudgery that comes with it.
