An example of “doing the ordinary things extraordinary”

BK got some heat for this quote, but I found quite a few examples of this where just 1 guy doing their job instead of trying to do too much would've led to a defensive stop. Here’s one example.
3rd and 10 early in the game. LSU is in a 4 man front with (left to right) Swinson, Smith, Perkins, Wingo. House calls a stunt for Perkins and Cover 1 with either a robber or a spy (Sam). This gets Wingo a 1 on 1 matchup with the RT who he annihilates, and Perkins running free completely unblocked. Here’s the alignment at the beginning.
As the play starts, everything is going according to plan. Swinson occupies the LT and gets on his inside shoulder. Smith is doubled by the G and C. Penn steps up in man coverage on the back. Perkins is coming around (he’s a blur lol)
Here’s the money shot. Perk unblocked on the left. Wingo dominating on the right. This is as easy as it gets. Great call, should be a sack and a punt.
But this is also where things go sideways. Swinson has already won the rep. If he just stays engaged on the LT Wingo and Perk meet at the QB and it’s over, but Swinson continues to pursue, works back to the outside shoulder and keeps getting upfield. He blocks Perkins on this play.
KJ makes a great play to get out of the sack from Wingo, but he should’ve never had the opportunity if Swinson just does his job and doesn’t try to be a hero.
Note the downfield coverage. Nobody open. Sam in position to make a play after KJ got out the pocket. This is a great call by House and he should be off the field. Instead Swinson got greedy, Sam missed the open field tackle and Arkansas converts on 3rd and long.
There are several examples of stuff like this from our DL in the game. Including the Long TD to the TE. You have to think no DL coach is causing some of this, but luckily it’s easy stuff to fix. Hopefully we get the kinks worked out.

I rewatched last night. There were 5 additional times at least where they should’ve been able to bring Jefferson down for a sack and they didn’t. Would’ve made a big difference.

This is not an issue limited to this year or these players, which means it’s coaching.

Coach O would never allow this

Players overpursued late in his tenure as well, but I think that was more of a symptom of the overall state of the program.

I understand what you're saying here, but I disagree.
Based on the screenshots, I wouldn't say he got greedy. I think he saw an opportunity and tried to take it. Perk could have gone a bit wider to give more room and that could have given him the sack too.
I think Wingo went too far inside and lost containment. He should have gone for the outside shoulder.
But I'm just a washed up football player. Those d-line stunts were always my favorite back in the day.

That’s quite literally not his job. He’s trying to do too much. His job is to occupy the left tackle to allow Perkins to come unblocked. Not doing his job allowed this play to happen. That’s the point.

KJ is tough QB to bring down and is elusive for big guy. Wont face many like him.

Right, How on earth is Swinson supposed to know to pull up there to make space for Perk while he's fighting a 320 lb bull (and winning, for that matter)?
Its like an outfielder calling off an infielder for a fly ball. The outfielder has right of way because he has full forward vision. Maybe Perkins needs to read that a little better and dip inside? Not sure.
Either way, we had three pass rushers get paws on KJ. He should have been on the ground.

You must be getting Wingo confused with Smith. Wingo absolutely annihilated the RT and ended the rep at KJs feet. I don’t want to see him “contain” I’d rather see him finish the sack. I’m sure he wishes he would’ve.

Did he? From who? I’d like to point and laugh at them.

He’s supposed to know because that’s his fricking job on the play

His job isn’t to get a sack or even pressure on that play.

Swinson does stay engaged with the LT....who his pushing him upfield. Now, perhaps he could have gone more to the inside of the LT to allow space for Perkins to loop around, but it's hard to say the guy is doing something wrong when he's trying to make a play. Unfortunately, even though all three guys got around the edge, there is a huge hole in the middle for Jefferson to step up....perhaps created by the fact LSU's "all world" DT is getting blown out of the play

That’s his whole job. Inside shoulder. Stay engaged.

He’s trying to do too much. If he does his job it’s a sack. He tried “hard to make a play” and lost contain.

This is defensive football 101 dude.
quote:
His job is to occupty the offensive tackle inside and prevent them from being in position to pick up the defensive tackle wrapping around

Did you talk to the coaches about what the play call was on this play or are you just assuming?

This was Perkins mistake. He should have gone inside of Swinson with Swinson holding the edge. Your point about it doing too much is correct but in this case Perkins should have gone inside of Swinson and it would have resulted in a sack.

I don’t need to talk to the coaches. This is basic football. Do you think perkins just wrapped all the way around from the RG for fun?
