There is also a rent house NEXT DOOR to mine that hasn't received similar scrutiny or annoyance from captain dickhead.

while it specifically talks about "short term" rentals, it doesn't exclude long term rentals. gray area.
what is their complaint?

perhaps your tenants are the dickheads and thus the reason you are receiving scrutiny?

why shouldn't someone be allowed to paint their house fluorescent pink?
they absolutely can. but if they sign a contract to adhere to the covenants of the property they purchased and it says they can't, then they can't.
i have yet to see an instance where someone was forcibly made to purchase a house in an HOA.

It's not gray at all. Your lease is permitted.

1) if someone wishes to do that they can knock themselves out in a non-hoa community
2) the entire reason HOAs exist is to maintain property values, and a bright pink house doesn't necessarily do that.
3) that was one basic example. Amy exterior modification needs approval for that same reason. Would a pink house with a chicken coop and a car on blocks and month old uncut grass be acceptable to you as a neighbor? I would doubt it
And again...if someone wants to live that way thats their right and that's perfectly fine, but they shouldn't be allowed to do so in a community where there are specific covenants against it and owners knowingly moved in anyway

Whats the specific complaint? Just that you are renting at all?

he posted one paragraph of his covenant. while i generally agree, i'd like to know what their actual complaint is.

They’ve been there less than a week…

In general I’m very happy that two of my homes exist within a HOA structure. In both cases they are rentals. I did have some issues with an HOA at a property I no longer own about garbage cans. The tenants had trouble fitting them in the garage and when there was a lot of snow they were impossible to move behind the garage.

Right. People willingly choose to live in these neighborhoods that give this power to other people in regards to their property. Like the color of their house.
Its so weird to me.

I work 50 hours a week and in a masters program. I am on my HOA board. You are just lazy.
Well ran HOAs are great at keeping property values up. That is really the only job of an HOA. If your HOA is doing something else or letting property values decrease, they are 100% wrong.

“You cannot lease your home” was the verbal complaint I received. I then received a letter from the HOA declaring that leasing my home constituted a commercial contract, which is just flat out wrong and can be proven wrong by a simple google search.

HOA’s are about as useful as a poop flavored lollipop. Why would I pay money every month to an organization that mismanages money and have to ask permission to paint my house agreeable grey?
Tell me this after your neighbor parks an RV in the front yard and then rents it out as an AirBnB to bachelor parties 7 nights a week.

You think it's weird that rules are in place to keep all your neighbor's houses looking nice and well kept and not like a rundown trailer park?

are you the OP's partner or something? what is going on?

meh. i can't speak for all but i reviewed my covenants over adn over again. they are basically what any civilized person would do. i would adhere to them generally even if i built a house on 40 acres away from everyone. i like it because some jackwagon can't come next door and have a bunch of junk in their yard or paint their house pink. or do other things that might make the property values go down.

When you get older and buy a house some day you might understand.
