Inch by inch, the government is encroaching on personal lives and rights. The power grab won't be sudden but a slow subtle decent.

According to recent research, as well as a push from the Biden administration, more than half the passenger vehicles sold in the United States will be electric by the year 2030. That means that more than half the cars on the road will not need gasoline at all, significantly diminishing how much states make through the gas tax.

Michigan reported that because of electric vehicles, the state has already made $50 million less than it should have from 2019-2021. And they worry that number is only going to increase in the coming years.

In order to combat the issue and ensure the state has sufficient funding to maintain its roadways, another proposal asks that all vehicle owners pay a set tax annually. However, many believe that this option would be unfair to those drivers who barely use the roads or have shorter commutes, as opposed to those who drive frequently and far distances.

Therefore, another proposal has been made to use GPS devices to track and tax mileage.

I am sure this government run program will be 100% accurate in the taxation and the data won’t be used for any other purpose.

This is absolutely how it starts with the government monitoring consumption then shutting off and not allowing the cars to travel if they deem you unfit to travel such as having different views or negative social media posts

It’s all right there. Anyone can see this coming a mile away

Over the road trucks are already required to pay taxes based off miles traveled by state. Recently had to help a customer with a mileage audit from the state of Oregon. Basically, Oregon says that they don't believe the mileage you turned in and it should be 'X'. Of course, it's always a higher number and you have to prove to them that what you turned in was correct or pay the difference and some interest.

The mechanisms are already in place to implement this on us. They just have to turn them on.

If you drive a ICE vehicle, the amount of tax you pay is based on fuel consumption, which is a reasonable analog to “distance driven”.

I don’t see the problem here. How do you propose we pay for highway maintenance.

encroaching on personal lives and rights ... power grab
Those taxes (mostly) go for road construction and maintenance.

You see it as wrong to assess those taxes based upon the amount of usage of those very roads?

If you are paying a tax at the pump, why pay a 2nd on the miles?

We should charge you a tax for being on this site.

Would they not just look at the logs that those truckers have been legally required to maintain for more than fifty years?

Does the government not get their cut on the electricity used to charge these electric vehicles?

So really what they want to do is force all Americans to subsidize those who buy electric cars.

You don't honestly think the government isn't already taxing us for that, do you?

Are they going to abolish the gas tax and use this as a replacement?

The state has mapping software. They compare the weigh station check ins to what their software says. If the tripsheet distance doesn't match, then you have to prove the mileage. In my customer's case, they changed versions of their mileage software and the routes changed from what Oregon had. We had to go back and reprint all the routes and show them why they were different from 2021.......

They should start with taxing air miles. The average tax payer flies once a year. This would be a tax that would hurt the wealthy instead of the average Joe.

I have no problem with that, but not letting the government put a gps in my car to see where I go. Of course, I'll never by an electric car so maybe I'll be exempt since I'm paying gas taxes?
