I don’t care how raw he is key is abusing him.
I hate this term so much.
Raw in the NFL is bad. Raw is a gamble that has a 20-30% chance of paying off. You waste two years of a rookie contract instead of someone that could contribute for those two years (or longer in Davenport's case).

The coaches clearly need to send someone to help him out though. Key has blown by him on like 3 of the last 5 plays.

If he starts next game I have zero faith in the Saints coaches
He might have to move inside for good.

Penning is the reason the saints aren’t winning this game.

Penning was so bad from right out the gate and basically turned into a backup. He was a 1st round pick.
Was it the scouting? The coaching? Both? Why is there no accountability for whoever screwed this up?

The Saints need an OT, and they let the Mississippi go ahead of them, so they reached again. Everyone knew Penning couldn't pass protect. He was a OG at best.

Idk but it’s a real bad look that we passed on Tyler smith and he goes a few picks later and is named an all pro this year.
Couple that with passing on Branch for Fosky and Achane for Miller and someone’s head should be rolling.

I know everybody is mad at the Saints front office right now, and deservedly so, but y’all look like real big dickheads playing Monday morning quarterback like this. The draft is so hard to predict. How would y’all feel if penning went to another team and lit it up and the guys you wanted came here and didn’t do shite? Because that’s very possible.
Posted on 1/31/24 at 2:57 pm to Townedrunkard
Including Penning there have been only 4 OL drafted in first round from FCS schools. Here are the others: Tytus Howard, Lester Holmes, and Jermaine Stephens. Stephens and Holmes were basically busts. Howard has had some injuries but hes been an average to decent starter.
Point being its just dumb to waste a first round pick on a FCS OL. Competition matters.

So we shouldn’t criticize the front office because the draft is too hard to predict? Even though it is literally their job to do this. Sorry but if you’re being paid to draft players and are applauded for the guys you hit on, you should also get criticism for the guys you massively miss on. Every NFL administration knows this- its the burden of the job.

Now how many FCS OL were taken in other rounds or undrafted and would be 1st rounders in a redraft? Larry Allen & Jahri Evans jump to mind. I'm sure there are others, these 2 always stuck out to me.
Bottom line, you can't rule someone out just because of the competition. With that said, in hindsight it appears there were some signs major that Penning should have been a 2nd or 3rd rounder at best. Especially considering some of the red flags were when he was competing against other FCS competition.

So I was waiting for someone to mention this. You can do that because the risk isnt great in later rounds. If you fail no one cares about a 4th or 6th round pick because the guy you passed up more than likely would also not have impacted the team. That’s not the case in the first round the risk isn’t worth the gamble especially with an OL who hasn’t seen close to Power 5 pass rushers in his college career. You want to develop guy- take the risk in lower rounds. Don’t waste a first round pick on it.

All I’m saying is that it’s really easy to take a test when you already have the answers
The whole ‘we should have taken ____ instead of _____’ is just silly to me because a lot of these guys success is based off of the teams they’re drafted to. The same scrub player in New Orleans might have been an all pro in a different situation, and vice versa
Just my opinion though

Ireland said in the Senior Bowl interview they drafted him for his athletic abilities and he knew coming from a small school he may not be able to contribute right away but had the tools to be a very good player. With his injuries he also hasn't had much playing time to catch up. He isn't wrong but one more year like this and he'll be the offensive version of Turner

I’ve said quite a few times I woukd have taken Branch in the 2nd and had Achane rated much higher than Miller.
It’s the front office job to make these decisions and they are doing a piss poor job.
I think Penning can still be salvaged and be a good player. It just might be at guard though.

Anyone who watched Achane in college should’ve seen he was a stud NFL RB coming out.

We don't have to speculate about this, there's plenty of history to prove they would be blasting the front office and coaching staff for letting him go and not paying him.
When you read these threads you have to understand Fan are terrible at assessing these things. Why, because they're too emotional. Do they get it right sometimes, yes but it's basically playing the odds rather than professional insight. Fact of the matter is most NFL players never live up to the expectation fans have and some don't live up to the expectation coaches have.
IMO Penning problems were 1) he missed just about all of this rookie year and most of the lead up training to his second year. and 2) he was thrust into the starting LT role in year 2 and struggled mightily and his confidence nose dived. YES he should have been more prepared and handled it better but I feel like most of the reasonability falls on the coaching staff (Marone specifically) for not recognizing it sooner and making changes also the O-line as a whole seems to have lacked development recently.
So take that for what it's worth because I'm just a fan that is too emotional.
