So I get a notice in the mail from my insurance company regarding the mileage my truck which is my secondary vehicle. Allegedly my insurance company received “third party information” that I am driving it more than I reported to them. I’m concerned as to what “third party” is reporting my mileage to them.
Anyone else run into something like this?
For what it’s worth, it estimated I drive it about 2500 per year when I renewed the policy in January 2023. Comparing the December 2022 odometer reading to the current reading, I’ve put 1600 miles on it in eight months, which seems on target with my estimate.

Is this a collector car or a stated mile policy or something?

They are probably just fishing to have a reason to raise your rate. However, who changes your oil?

Oil changes, servicing, etc.. Ever check carfax on your vehicle? That stuff is reported.

Heinous. USAA just requested my current odometer reading…& my signature had to be notarized!
Was existentially troubled enough by it that I never returned the form.

No, it’s an old 20+ year old beat up Chevy with 240,000 miles.

They may be scraping sites like Carfax which show dates and mileage for service if reported and many (most?) dealerships report it.

Probably an oil change.
The data collection is getting out of hand in this country. Dealerships are now requesting/requiring VIN numbers in order to purchase collision parts. As soon as those VIN numbers hit the computer system, your vehicle is tagged as "possibly being in a collision" and information goes to CarFax.

Benny’s Oil Change and other oil change places get paid to report that info.

I did not know they report that. Thank you for the info.
The last company that changed the oil was Wal Mart in December 2022. Bought a new battery from Advance for it in May 23.

As a consumer, can one request not to have any data reported to Carfax, etc.? I can understand if your vehicle is in a major accident --- that's understandable and expected.
But for a simple oil change? Or is it best to find a local non-technical mechanic shop that is "simple"?

There is a company called LexusNexus which gets all the reported data from oil changes, carfax, etc. so essentially any time you do any maintenance on he vehicle, they report it.

You can set up an account on carfax and see all this. I get an email about two weeks after an oil change saying it’s been recorded.

Technology and the Mark of the Beast something, something, evil....

I don’t see a problem with this. When buying a car it’s nice to see the service report on car. It’s also nice to prevent people from cheating the insurance company. Because the insurance companies aren’t going to lose money so you know who subsidizes those cheats? You do!

I’m thinking about removing license plate, covering the dashboard vin and paying cash next time to see what happens.

I swear it feels like USAA is trying to go out of business.
