The Dock, Poet's, Last Call, Recovery Room, BWW, TimeOut, McB's, some liberal college bars on the bad side. Wasn't all that bad, but chicks only wanted to know where you went to High School.
That was 20 years ago. I hear some of those places are still open.
All those places you mentioned are long gone
except for McB's. I didn't include BWW since it's a chain and has multiple locations.
Poet's and The Dock were legendary places and had been around since the 70s and 80s. The Dock was a hangout for movie stars when they would be working in Canton. Sandra Bullock, Samuel L Jackson, Keifer Sutherland, Mathew McConaughey and several others partied there during the filming of A Time To Kill. Prince even performed an encore show there once.
All those old places are gone now and nothing really replaced them. I don't know what kids do these days around here. You definitely don't have as much travel freedom at night as you did 20-30 years ago.

Ridgeland is about to go downhill next.

That was actually in Ridgeland.
Close enough

The state hospital can only effectively run because they have their own water system.

Then Clinton and Pearl. Too many apartments. Flowood will eventually fall with Madison being the last hold as the mayor, Queen Mary, has held the line for decades on apartments, building codes and zoning.
Old Town Brandon is kind of out of the way, so it will be good shape longer term.

Genuine question, what makes it so bad?

Yeah there really aren't any bars to have fun at anymore. Maybe pelican cove but not the same.
I can't think of a bar here where I would actually go see a band and I don't mean the 70 something year old geriatrics playing a guitar

Yeah bar/nightlife scene is weak. Dont get me wrong, there are plenty of bars to go and risk your life at.

Not sure why you got the downvotes but Madison, Flowood, and Brandon are far better than any of the BR suburbs
It's from the difference in MS and LA politics, MS was more than happy for the burbs to incorporate and wall off the shitshow, LA is not (see St. George), the lake and river make it tougher for BR as well.
Time will tell if the more smaller communities or ever expanding metropolis model works better but my bet is on the first. The Jackson metro can allow Jackson to die and be rebuilt over time, in BR they are all in the same boat and sink together.

Shuckers, but not really my music scene, regardless of who's playing. I hate bar songs more than anybody on the planet. I can't even drink to it. Their food is decent though. Pelican Cove is ok if the weather is nice.

I work in EMS in Jackson. Currently looking at homes and even some “nicer” neighborhoods are not safe anymore. A guy was shot and killed less than a mile away from UMMC the other day. Broad daylight. Major intersection. I pass through it 1000 times a night while working. Lawlessness everywhere and our only hope is Capital Police.

A mile away from umc is wood street. Pretty dangerous actually

I've lived in Flowood 25 years, demographics are starting to slowly change. It won't be in my lifetime, but MS will see a mass migration out of young, bright upwardly mobile folks. The slugs will stay. It is already happening, gonna ramo up as the demographics change.

Still another one in Pocahontas,
Was just about to post this! Didn't know if anybody else knew it was there.

Not a fan though because they bought out my childhood/teenage years place, Catfish Haven. It was also far better than anything Cock of the Walk could throw down on a plate
Also, the Big D's Barbecue teepee that was right up the highway has been replaced by a DG.

The Gallows Bar in Brandon,(located underneath Genna Benna's) owned by the same couple that own Georgia Blue, Genna Benna's, and Good Boy's Po' boys is a really nice bar with live music on the weekends.

WW2 Museum, New Orleans Museum of Art are great places to visit. Love NOMA and the sculpture garden.

I also drove from Jackson to Columbus, GA this summer and there is nowhere to stop between Meridian and Montgomery on that stretch.
Obviously you have never been to the Walmart in Selma. Southern charm at it's best.
Also there was a time when they had a really good Tex Mex place and Chinese Restaurant. Both had a chittlins night.
