People selling crap, legit or stolen, is all done online these days. What keeps a pawn shop in business?

Stolen goods.

Impulse control issues.

People who shop at pawn shops don’t want to wait.

The thieves and crackheads need the money as quickly as possible. Pawn shop is instant.

Pawn shops buy low and sell high. The pawn shops usually sell a lot online BTW.

Because you can't get cash right this second with no bank account or credit to fill your gas tank in exchange for a stolen tool on ebay

I often wonder this as well. I sell tools for a living and I buy guns every now and then. I have yet to see a deal on either of these in a pawn shop.

Pawn shops are online, they are on ebay, amazon, walmart, facebook, target... all the marketplaces. It's simple. They provide cash instantly to people that...need it.

The last time I set foot in a pawn shop was around 2008ish and my TV shite the bed right before a UGA game was about to start. I lived in a shitty part of town and there was a pawn shop just down the street. I went in there to get the cheapest TV they had as quickly as possible just so I could watch the game. The cheapest TV they had was $100. I offered $60. She said "I got more than that in it" which was preposterous. I told her I could go to walmart and get their cheapest brand new TV for $100, why would I buy a used one for the same price? She said "Honey, I can't compete with Wal Mart".

So I went to walmart and bought a brand new TV for $100.

frick that bitch.

Accessibility would be the big thing.

Between not having the internet, and needing cash fast, the pawn crowd will always be around.

I frequently cross-shop new stuff with used stuff and it's absurd how many used stuff stores price things. One day you find a screaming bargain, one day something is 2x the new price. WTF...

For example, I buy used flat panels for about $10. They usually don't have a cord, but they have a 3 day money-back guarantee and a cord is $8, then add a $30 Roku or Fire TV with remote.

Turn around and the same store has junk TV's from 2005 with a cord for $50-75. You can almost buy a small new TV for that!

This makes sense to me. I can see myself selling something to a pawn shop way easier than buying something from a pawn shop.

I love picking up power tools in a pinch at pawn shops. Times are tough for them day laborers.

Gun selection has been pretty nice too.

They used to have a robot like in Rocky 4 at the Pelican Pawn on G-Town.
