Best base for Yosemite.

Looking at a cali trip next summer with 5 of us. Been browsing airbnbs and trying to find a nice house to base for 4ish days . Would plan on driving into the park 2-3 days. I’m really liking some of the places I’m seeing in Mariposa , Midpines , and Oakhurst. Any of you travel aficionados have a favorite base for visiting Yosemite. I realize the inside the park lodging would be most convenient but I’d rather get a better value on lodging and just plan to drive a bit. Any info appreciated. Thanks in advance.
*also to note. We will first be flying into San Jose or San Fran and spending 4 days in the Monterey Bay Area. So we will be driving over towards Yosemite from seaside CA.

Stay as close to park as you can afford. We flew. into Oakland cost of tickets dictated this and rented a car there. Found a nice place outside of west gate about 15 miles east of Groveland? ......If not you will spend time just driving to get there in the am and then waiting to access park...

Stay in the park if you can. Foresta would be my first choice outside the park. Then Yosemite West, then Wawona.

Just got back. Stayed at housekeeping camp. Was weary cause had reservations in oakhurst. It is a long ride to any of those towns you mentioned. Housekeeping was very primitive but was worth it.

Appreciate the replies. After further research I think we may end up pulling the trigger on a place east of groveland in the pine mountain lake community. Looks like it has a lot of fun stuff for the teens/5 yr old plus it’s right on a good golf course. Also , the place is was huge and very nice for the price. I’ll just suck it up on the drive into the park. I’m sure there’s plenty to look at along the route.

Not really. It's a bunch of mining outcrops and cow pastures and then BOOM el capitan.

Stay in the Valley if at all possible. The drive in and out is nightmarish and can take forever. The lodges are very spartan and no AC except a small portable (not window unit) unit. Was good enough though. The nicer hotel is good but I didn’t stay there. For the price I’d just do the lodge.

For anyone considering staying at Oakhurst you may as well take a look at Bass Lake. It's only another 20 minutes to the east. Start with The Pines. It's where they filmed The Great Outdoors which pretty much everyone has seen.

Got married here. It's nice.

I went to Yosemite back in 2018 and stayed at Rush Creek Lodge. It was pretty pricey, but it's only a couple of miles from the entrance into Yosemite.
There is a really nice restaurant and a nice bar there.

We did an airbnb/vrbo in Yosemite West, great location inside the park. So didn't have to deal with the entrance line everyday.

I love Tuolumne, so I’d stay at an Airbnb off of 395 on that side of the ditch.
