Flying United / Seat Choices

Next week I'm flying United from MSY - Portland with a 40 min layover at IAH. Tight layover, I am only using a carryon suitcase and my laptop bag, so no checked luggage.
For my MSY - IAH segment, I am currently seated in Row 29. I have the option to upgrade my seat location to Row 15 (row before exit row, so no recline) or Row 23 for $21. All are aisle seats. There is no row 16-19 on this airplane.
Do y'all think I woud save enough time moving closer to the plane, when it comes to deplaning, that it's worth the $21 upcharge? It looks like there is 164 seats, and 63 are available now, so plane is a little more than half full.

Those will go away with the basic economy tickets that don't have their seats assigned yet, would guess it will go out near full
For $20 and the peace of mind I'd probably move up. Granted if your flight is delayed then you're screwed anyway as far as seat assignments go

are you going to get out of the plane sooner? sure.
Is it going to make a difference? not at all.
You paying $21 and sitting 14 rows closer to the exit of the plane isn't going to be the reason you make or miss your connection.
Your connecting flight knows where you are coming from, and they'll wait a few minutes for you if they know you arrived late.
I had a flight, granted it was the last one of the night, from chicago to milwuakee, and they delayed the flight 20 minutes just for me to board the plane b/c my connecting flight was late arriving. I felt like a dick somewhat since i was the reason the flight was delayed, somewhat, but i basically ran from one end of O'hare to the other to get there as fast as i could. They shut the doors immediately after i boarded and got going.

United sucks with all the pre-boarding they do. What I learned to get a group 3 boarding is to get a window seat. They were making people in group 4 check carryons the other day. So if you have a late boarding group you might want to pay the extra to get a window seat and a higher boarding group.

When will I know what group I’m in?
And ugh I hate window seats but I can deal for an hour

Didn’t realize not everyone had assigned seats. It’s been at least a decade since I flew United.
My flight is pretty early in the day so hopefully will be on time.

There's basic economy that doesn't get an assigned seat and doesn't get a carry on for most flights. They only get a laptop size bag.

are you really asking if getting off the plane 5 minutes sooner is worth 20 bucks? Because that’s what it sounds like you are asking
to me? frick no
to you? That’s a question only you can answer

Two things I hate, super tight layovers and boarding late since I almost always carry on. So for me.... flying solo with a tight layover and a 3 plus hour flight on the 2nd leg I would consider upgrading at least the 2nd leg to economy plus, maybe the first leg too. I know its extra money, more than $21 for sure, but I think about it as spending an extra $60 for my mental health for day. I've spent money on a lot worse things.

40 min at IAH isn’t bad. I’ve been delayed and had 15-20 min layovers and made it at IAH.
$20 to move up 10 rows isn’t a bad price for piece of mind. I wouldn’t usually like a seat that doesn’t recline, but I could do that for an hour.
If you’re worried about it, I’d move up. But I wouldn’t think it’s absolutely necessary either.

I once made an international-to-domestic connection at IAH in 10 minutes. That is, from the time I got off the plane, I made it through customs and immigration, switched terminals, and made it to my gate in 10 minutes flat. The gate agent was surprised, as her computer told her that I hadn't deplaned yet from my arriving flight.

You should be going in and out of C terminal, so 40 min isn't bad.
Now if you are into A/B terminal and then have to take the train over to C, you could be pushing it.

If that 5 min means making a connection Bs not it’s worth it.
I’m used to flying southwest either direct or with longer layovers and I can sit anywhere available.

Looking at the last few days, it seems sometimes I would stay in C or E, and sometimes I would need to transfer between C/E. Looks like these are pretty close. It also appears that in recent days, these flights have been on time *knocks on wood*
However, the comments about overhead bin space concerned me. So I decided to not upgrade seats, but I did add premier access for the MSY - IAH segment, to make sure I was in Boarding Group 2 and could get an overhead bin. I think if I would have had to gate check my bag, that could have been bad news. I'm less worried about having to gate check my bag for IAH - PDX, and my return flight has a three hour layover, so I'm less worried on that one.
Thanks everyone for your help.

C and E at IAH are connected, so something that looks like a long connection, i.e. C43 to E2 is actually only a couple of gates apart
