I think his is thinking of Caney Lake.

LMAO...even that's going the wrong direction. Caney is directly north of Minden. Spent many a fun Sunday afternoon there in my teens.

I’d reckon they’re taking about the Jackson Parish Caney.

Caney Lakes is north of Minden.

Caney Lake or Caney Creek Lake is between Jonesboro and Chatham.

Just drove back thru there from Branson. Sad to see all the downtown storefronts of Lake Providence shuttered or borded up. And the restaurant on north side is now closed ; we ate there as kids.

Merryville LA on the TX border has a seat at the table too.
The tiny town time forgot was excited when they got a Dollar General.

I didn't know the other one existed. But seriously, how many people in the Minden area say Caney Lakes? I've sure never heard it.

What happened to Tallulah and LP? My friend has family land there, but says it’s crap area. She wishes she could sell one day and get over to Vicksburg.

Nothing really happened there. But if anything, modern farming lead to farms needing far less employees and that was the major employer in the area.

East Carroll and West Carroll have long been some of the poorest parishes in La. This article in Time magazine summed it up.

quote:

The Time article, a 1994 piece that declared Lake Providence “the poorest place in America,” was the first in a series of national media reports on the town.

Once the farming jobs went away there is little other industry in the area to employ people.

At this point the largest economic force for the area is probably disability checks.

Those lands have always been a land of have and have nots. Since the 1830's, when the government moved the Indians west, and opened the land to farming the people that have land have been the haves and those that don't have been the have nots.

Lastly, both parishes don't have a big population, but there is a good percentage that live in poverty, have always lived in poverty, and likely will always live in poverty.

Likewise there is a very small percentage who have tons of money and will likely always have family derived money.

Resided in Lake Providence in 1990. Moved there from Sabine Parish. Pissed off a local blue blood named Jack Wyly. I don’t recommend the town.

Probably pretty good.

I’ve run into random people in New Iberia over the years that informed me that they’ve seen my posts here.

Just for the record, I don’t know any of these people. I was in the summer after my senior year of high school. There was a good looking blonde I wanted to meet. Next thing I knew, all these older guys wanted to kick my arse.

Drove through it on the way to watch the Tigers dismantle Arkansas. Scenic around the lake, just don’t look too close.

Interesting guy. Iwo Jima veteran. He was president of the local LSU Alumni chapter at one time. Did a stretch in Club Fed for bribery. Article at link talks about him and the town in general
