I’m not really familiar with his career pre iron man (born early/mid 90s) because by the time I was going to movie theaters he had basically fallen out of favor. First time I really saw him was in Iron man and then Sherlock Homes and always loved both of those performances. Obviously iron man became who he was basically and he far and away led the MCU and is probably the reason it was able to take off the ground so we’ll and reach the ultimate heights it did.

Of course that’s a big tent pole and he was the best part of it but probably not super artistic in the way a lot of actors like to challenge themselves. Well he got his chance in Oppenheimer and absolutely crushed it. Hopefully he wins an Oscar for that performance. I’m just so happy for him he got his life together and had the success that he’s had and on top of that didn’t get sucked into only being iron man the rest of his life. He showed he has serious action chops beyond the CGI fest of marvel and can really deliver.

I think he’s shown he can do whatever he wants the rest of his career and he will do very well.

As a child of the eighties who got to know him with weird science, less than zero, etc, I have to agree. He fell so far off the map, we forgot about him. There is nothing as good as feel-good Redemption story

He played a serial killer in a movie called In Dreams that scared me when I was 13. It is silly now as an adult.

We'll see if that lasts because I have no doubt Disney’s going all out to bring him back.

One of the biggest negatives of the marvel machine, regardless of whether you like the movies or not, is that they have taken a considerable amount of prime away from some of the best actors and directors of this generation and the last.

At this point it will be his choice. Other studios will certainly offer him more challenging roles. I meant more that I’m glad he didn’t get pigeon holed where he really didn’t have a choice because nobody else would cast him in things to avoid people seeing “iron man”.

He has a good but woke series on restoring some cars called dream cars. Cool mods but he talks too much about global warming. But worth the watch

100% agree, and specifically in the case of rdj.

I’ve been saying this for a while but the infantilized screeches of modern day movie goers drown me out

His troubles with addiction during his run on Ally McBeal was heartbreaking. Larry was such a charming character.

Pre-Holmes/Stark, he would've been one of those celebs that generated no zero surprise if you had turned on the TV to have discovered news that he had died via OD.

I, too, am very happy he turned his life around.

He was really good in Zodiac too, which came out the year before Iron Man.

He also recently said that men are the cause of all wars and he hopes that one day we can live in a matriarchal society, and has lost a shite ton of weight since becoming a vegan, like an unhealthy amount. He’s better than when he was a druggie but he’s still a little cuckoo if you ask me

I never saw "Chaplin" until the last year or so but after watching a documentary on Charlie Chaplin and seeing more of what he was like, RDJs performance in that movie is absolutely astonishing

Iron Man saved RDJ's career. Without that film, would we be seeing him today at all?

True but that’s only one person. The rest of the actors swallowed up by it didn’t have his demons. So we traded an RDJ Renaissance possibly for the loss of more unique and dramatic roles in other actors.

I believe Iron Man put him back on the map, but Tropic Thunder came out that year and was hilarious.

I watched the first episode where they turned his bad arse truck into a fricking EV.

No interest in watching any more but if he turns a C2 Vette into an EV someone may hunt him down like the Mandarin.

He was good in US Marshals. It was a supporting role, but still a great movie.

Who? Evans? Helmsworth? Those are the only ones that could be said might be typecast by their association with Captain America or Thor. None of the other MCU actors are that closely tied with their character. And it's not like either one of those two are going to get confused with Laurence Olivier.
