Amsterdam to Ban Cruise Ships to Control Tourism, Pollution

A cruise ship passes Amsterdam central railway station.

Amsterdam voted to ban cruise ships in an effort to cut back on the inflow of tourists and reduce pollution from the giant vessels.
The Dutch capital’s council voted on Thursday to restrict the jumbo ships from docking in the city and aims to close its central cruise-ship terminal, according to a municipality spokesperson. The timeline and details of implementation will be decided after consultations with various stakeholders, the spokesperson said.
“The polluting cruise is not in line with Amsterdam’s sustainable ambitions,” said Ilana Rooderkerk, the local leader of the socially progressive D66 party, which introduced the motion. “Cruise ships in the city center also do not fit in with the task of combating mass tourism.”

Amsterdam has one of the largest cruise ports in Europe, hosting hundreds of mega ships and about 700,000 cruise passengers each year. The country has other cruise terminals in Rotterdam and IJmuiden.
The decision comes amid a wider crackdown on the tourist influx and sense of disruption they bring to Amsterdam, a city famed for its red light district and coffee shops that sell marijuana. Mayor Femke Halsema has been spearheading a campaign to discourage visitors from taking what she has called a “vacation from morals.”
Amsterdam attracts more than 1 million tourists on average each month, surpassing its population of just over 800,000. Halsema is determined to permanently shift the economic balance between residents and tourists, and rethink Amsterdam’s free-wheeling image as a magnet for sex- and drug-seeking vacationers.

Certain kinds of tourist I'm sure.

Everything I've heard out of the Netherlands the past 2 years has been insane. Whoever is in charge seems to be intentionally trying to destroy that country.

If you've ever been to Amsterdam, Venice, or even Santorini, you know these cruise ships are kind of a menace.
Venice should almost certainly heavily restrict them.

Now what happens is since cruise ships can't call, more independent tourists come and force the cost of housing for locals through the roof.

Let’s be frank, that’s a rude comment, Otto.

You can think that, but I think those that visit Amsterdam via a cruise ship are not likely to attempt to visit the city via other means, such as driving there.

We are more isolated here, and are having the same battle. Youll get a decrease in visitors, but an increase in city services and infrastructure useage
Less impact comes from cruise ships than it does people who fly in, rent hotels and cars.
Yet the locals still want bans or limits.

So destroying economies and businesses all to appease the climate gods. Sounds like a great plan.

Venice recently did something similar to this as well. In 2020 Key West citizens voted to ban cruise ships. They used to have three piers that held ships, now only the privately owned dock can receive ships. They were hoping their vote would include the privately owned dock, but it didn’t.

They don't have to go through all that trouble.Just setup surströmming serving lines at the Amsterdam equivalent of Golden Corral. That'll clean out all those rude brawling American tourists, everyone except the Cajuns.
We'd better start a pot of rice! - A Cajun tourist

This has to be as they're pulling into port since if they're leaving port I could only imagine all of the smoke rolling out of it.

How so? They already have a pretty strict short term rental regulation. Any property can only be rented as an airbnb, etc. for 30 days max per year and its enforced stringently. I just had lunch with a friend there last week and he got busted exceeding the limit and he said he may sell that property to pay the fine. Most likely the ships will use Rotterdam as a base which is a 40 minute train ride to Amsterdam.

I was there a few months back during a trash strike. Piles of trash all over. Was still cleaner than the French quarter though.
I wish we had public urinals on the streets here.

I'm from KW. The island can barely handle one ship per day. Aside from the military piers there is only one pier capable of accommodating a cruise ship. Cruise ships must arrive early and depart by 5pm so as not to impede the sunset views.

Whenever I've talked to local business types about cruise ships, be it domestically or abroad, the answer is typically that it provides revenue but to all the wrong places and/or it encourages existing local businesses to modify into something that serves cruise lines.
Cruise tourists eat at places tailored to tourists, they shop at trinket and t shirt shops that wouldn't exist but to serve them, etc. It's a boost for the economy, but in a way that inevitably cheapens the place. Pretty much any tourist who has hunted some old world city for cool gifts knows what it's like to pass 25 t-shirt and junk shops trying to find one local retailer with interesting wares.
It always feels a little hypocritical to whine about them when I'm - of course - a tourist too, but I completely get the complaint.

Cruise ships in Key West are/were a horrible idea to begin with. Its silly as a departure port due to limited long term parking and with Miami being so close.
