Edit - I will say that everyone reacted similarly to the “spilled coffee” story from decades ago, and those pictures were gnarly looking. Not sure it was worth the big lawsuit, but I’d want some serious retribution if my skin was melted.

They were, and it sounds like the lady didn't lawyer up until they repeatedly refused to cover her medical bills. She apparently was looking to nail them to the wall.

I still think coffee should be expected to be hot (but not that hot according to Kramer and Jackie Childs) and placing a hot cup of coffee between your legs while driving is asking for trouble.

Mother was negligent to me. She hands the box back to the kid without checking anything? I usually checked my kids food before I did that when he was younger for a variety of reasons. So kid doesn't get burned, but chokes on a nugget. McDonald's fault they made nuggets to large to swallow whole? bullshite verdict.

Agree with this. Our kids are older and we still check the food before handing it to them. And when we give it to them it's 1 fry, or 1 nugget at a time, and don't just have them fend for themselves.

We also don't do a lot of eating in the car and if we do fast food would rather eat inside than in the cars; but that's a completely different conversation/reason

When they fry a batch of 50 nuggets, they don’t know which ones will be used for kids meals and which ones will be used for adult meals.

And McDonald’s did not serve it to a child, they handed it to an adult. Not sure if you’re a parent, but I would never hand my 4 year old a box of hot nuggets. This is negligence on the parent 100%.

Agree with this. Having worked there in highschool, you really can't win. People don't want them cold or warmed over in a tray, but you can't give them to them hot or they'll get burned.

A Florida jury awarded $800,000 in damages to a 7-year-old girl on Wednesday for the suffering and mental anguish caused when a Chicken McNugget fell on her thigh, causing a second-degree burn.

Wait.. they are supposed to be serving those warmer than room temp?

McDonalds for years completely ignored warnings from every tester, scientist, etc within their own organization, from industry standards experts outside the organization and so on about how dangerous it was how hot they were making their coffee, and literally no one else in the entire industry was doing what they were doing. They actually got sued several times previously and continued doing what they were doing. They had many internal memos with warnings from their own people with high level executives basically responding "we don't care".

All of this, plus the woman who sued had tried to settle with them prior to trial and McDonalds wouldn't budge. They got hammered and deserved it.

I remember the coffee incident well. They made a Seinfeld episode off of it. What’s funny is there are people stupid enough to not realize coffee or food is hot. What’s sad is stupid people expecting compensation for their stupidity.

Yeah, I doubt a 2nd degree burn is going to leave much disfigurement and scarring.

Warming trays, lol. If they are slow, you can hopefully request a fresh drop.

This incident may make sure no one see hot nuggets at a McDonald's ever again.

To add to it, the woman just wanted McDonalds to pay for her medical bills, and they refused. Afterwards she decided to sue. The pics are online, it was a very gnarly injury.

But with this case. If the nuggets were that hot, wouldn't the mom had felt that heat from handling the box?

In the McDonalds case the coffee was so hot (and McDonalds had been warned to tone it down) it basically burned off her clitoris. And she was NOT driving, she was parked and somone bumped into her car.

2nd degree? Just looked at the pics and that seems a little more severe! Amount is still kinda out there though.

I remember that crap.

Mc donald’s had increased the temp on their coffee due to customers complaining it wasn’t staying hot til they got to work then that happened.
