As a prescription for weight loss. Costs, dangers, effectiveness. If Germans, mea culpa.

Cost- high as giraffe arse unless covered by insurance. Compounder versions are an option but also really costly.
Dangers- None identified yet except some mild GI discomfort but I’d be willing to bet it’ll be less than being severely overweight.
Effectiveness- very impressive so far

Have had 2 family members, niece & nephew mid 40's, who lost 40 & 60 lbs. & 5 mths in, have maintained their loss. But as it is primarily for diabetics, not much insurance coverage out there, i.e. costly as noted here. Charles Barkley, the former NBA star, has lost over 60 lbs as well, so it does work.

GLP-1’s are showing crazy results for those who commit to it. If your insurance doesn’t cover MJ, you could always try for Wegovy which is the weight loss version of the infamous ozempic.

Go for ozempic and get pre authorization. Mounjaro is tough to get

I think there are downsides like muscle loss but the upside is much greater if you are obese.

No real studies on actual muscle loss only lbm

Not familiar with the "infamous ozempic"? Wegovy is a RX prescription?

Instead of shooting some unknown shite into your body, how about the gym and diet?
I kid….a little. If you are too morbidly obese to hit the gym or go for walks then I don’t have a problem with it. It beats the alternative of dying. If your 50-70lbs overweight and just undisciplined and lazy, then you’re just undisciplined and lazy.

It's a peptide. Guy who invented noticed gila monster lizards or some kind of lizard would go a long time without eating. Decided to figure out why and discovered a hormone that regulates blood sugar. LINK
It's probably just as safe as any other peptide, I don't know why anyone would be mad about people losing weight.
Maybe they learn what they need to eat, maybe they lose enough to motivate them to the gym or maybe they gain it all back.

Do you have to take that shite forever? Serious question. What happens when/if you stop taking it?

I’m on my 5th week of Ozempic.
I finally caved and got on it. I’m down a few pounds with no side effects so far.
I took mounjaro for a couple of weeks back in the early fall last year and I was so constipated and bloated that I stopped it.

Depends.
I have a few patients who have a goal weight in mind and then plan to get off. I have some that are on it with no plans to get off.
The real question will be of these people who are on it are making the changes needed to succeed in the long term, otherwise it’s nothing more than a fad diet IMO

Do you have any patients who are doing TRT at the same time as GLP-1?
Posted on 7/19/23 at 7:05 am to Uncle JackD
None that come to mind offhand.

How many pounds are you trying to lose Jose?
Posted on 7/19/23 at 7:38 am to OysterPoBoy
I want to get down like 10-15 pounds.
I was 229 this morning before going to the gym. Prior to med school I was in the best shape and I weighed like 215.

They're starting to crack down on Ozyempic too. Unless you're diabetic, people are having a hard time getting prescriptions filled.

Have you noticed the semaglutide being any less effective than tirzepatide?
