Maybe this is for the OT, maybe not.... I still don't have confidence that I really know what this term actually means.
Here's my stab...
Gaslighting - Artificially inflating the importance of an issue

Have you tried googling it?

you must be young. Run a Google search on “gaslight IMDb.“
it means “providing false information in order to cause another person to believe that they are going insane.“

No, it's just happening at a much higher rate in our society, and see the term used more to accurately describe what is taking place. The majority of course is in the political/social arena and the media.
Has it been misused? Sure as is a lot of terminology can be, but in this case gaslighting has become a more used tool.

In the case of the current corporate news media, gaslighting is their coordinated efforts to mislead and deceive the American people with information that is either blatantly false, information that’s lacking full context, information that’s incomplete and more importantly, information that has a distinct and obvious political bias. This false or questionable information is run on a news cycle loop 24/7 until the people who are receptive to the gaslighting take the download.

No one is trying to make anyone else believe that they are insane. They are simply misleading people for political purposes. That is a different animal, IMO.
politicians (and arguably some in the media) are certainly misleading the public in any number of ways. They are not “gaslighting.”

Plenty of evidence to support my opinion, so thank you for letting me have mine. You're so generous.

The Fairy religion is a prime example of how the government and society manipulates human beings.

Gaslighting is when someone knows/observes the truth/reality and someone else purposely ignores that reality and tells you really there's a different reality.
Comes from a movie where a husband would slowly dim a stair gaslight each day, and then his wife would notice its dimmer making a comment to her husband to which he would feign ignorance even though he knew damn well it was dimmer. It was a psychological game ands she didn't question him because she trusted him. Even though she could observe with her own eyes the truth that the light had been dimmed, her husband still lied to her face about it.
Our news networks do the same to their constituents. They are granted a certain level of trust and will abuse it by lying and misrepresenting the truths even if those people can see the lie with their own eyes.

The entire premise of “gaslighting“ is a desire to make another person believe that she is going insane. in your view, who in American politics is trying to make other people believe that they are insane? Why? What is the political benefit of causing a voter to believe that he is insane?
they are misleading, in some cases intentionally so. But where is the insanity element?

It’s a fine phrase that serves a purpose, but like a lot of therapy speak, dummies online throw it around all the time to where it’s essentially meaningless. I’m not saying your parents weren’t “toxic” or that your boss isn’t actually a “narcissist” or whatever, but you probably aren’t the person that should be making those calls

Children are being sex trafficked and you know it’s happening, but they are telling you no it’s not, it’s just a conspiracy.
This is the type of leftist Soviet Union shite when nobody knew what was true or not anymore.
We all heard cries of blm and defund the police. It was republicans that wanted to defund the police.
That type of shite might make you question your sanity.

Yes, but the concept has naturally expanded.
The assumption underlying gaslighting is that objective truth exists and that everyone normally operates on the premise that communication between parties is designed to seek truth. It relies on trust.
With postmodernists and cultural marxists, truth is relative, and communication is always a battle for power between competing groups.
So they constantly use language with double meaning. The exoteric meaning of their words is designed to con the other person into adopting their ideology with a vaguely truthy statements, but the esoteric, deeper, true meaning is something else and more comprehensive and the opposite of objective truth.
That’s why every institution that is infected with woke ideology can be said to be using gaslighting techniques.
This evolution and expanded definition of gaslighting happened naturally. In fact, the very effort by wokists to deny this usage and control the language is gaslighting in and of itself by the new definition. It’s not surprising that the wokists are using a different standard for themselves than for everyone else when it comes to understanding the development of language.

Gaslighting is an insidious form of manipulation and psychological control. Victims of gaslighting are deliberately and systematically fed false information ...
Can it lead to insanity? You bet, if concentrated enough. To get someone to go insane, doesn't there need to be psychological manipulation involved. Just because they are not successful in making Americans insane does not mean they are not using the tactics of gaslighting sir.

This battle flag is materially and factually incorrect. "Trans women" are mentally-ill men who cannot function in modern society because their brain chemistry is more fricked up than a football bat due to not knowing which bathroom to use.

Now that you have cleared all that up do pedantic.

Why the selective edit?
do some people use the term in a way different than its original meaning? Sure.

I will put this here.
To get someone to go insane, doesn't there need to be psychological manipulation involved. Just because they are not successful in making Americans insane, does not mean they are not using the tactics of gaslighting sir.
You're under the false impression that for it to be gaslighting one must reach insanity. That is not correct at all.
Why the selective edit? I was highlighting the points to my argument. Which is gaslighting is being used whether it is successful or not at obtaining the goal of someone questioning themselves, or going insane.
Just look at all the mostly white liberals who have succumbed to the stories that they are racist and doubt who they are and start apologizing for being something they never were.
