Freshman in Focus: Javien Toviano

quote:

“From a measurable standpoint he checks in where you want a top defensive back prospect to be around 6 feet, 185 pounds. Long-limbed athlete who has a 77-inch wingspan to further validate his overall size. His athleticism is above average and shows up consistently.

Toviano is a muscular, broad-shouldered young man who still has a lot of room to add mass and gain strength as he develops in the weight room. His lower half is lean and well-defined. Flashes very good quickness and change of direction for a longer-body athlete. Does a nice job of being smooth transitioning once he flips his hips and is light on his feet.

Good in his backpedal keeping his body square with the ability to plant and go once the receiver has declared in his break. Good in press coverage where he doesn’t panic. Shows patience as he mirrors the receiver with good eye placement and leverage.

Once the ball is in the air, he reacts well to the receiver going for it and attacks the hands to make a play. In off-coverage, flashes the instincts to read and react quickly and not get caught in bad body position. Does a nice job of getting depth on his drops and staying in his zone without chasing receivers and being disciplined.”

2023 Impact:

This past spring was a proving ground for some of the younger players such as Toviano. While some may worry about the lack of depth that LSU has, Kelly seems convinced to look at the situation from a positive point of view. Instead of being down about the veterans not being there, he has instead taken the role of being excited to see so many young players being put into spots to see how they can manage it.

Toviano was one of those players that Kelly and the staff praised for becoming more confident making checks and calls in the secondary. With the injury history being a concern for guys like Major Burns and Greg Brooks Jr., Toviano could find himself needing to step up and be ready if his name is called.

Didn't Toviano have one of the slower 40 times for a top DB?

Kid is a baller. He played in the same district as Desoto and Duncanville and is one of the few kids that looked like he belong with those guys.
He will play a lot this year and start next year. I expect him at nickel or safety not CB.

I'm pretty sure I remember some of the recruiting sites reasoning of not ranking him higher than he already was is because of questionable speed, quickness, etc.

A little stiff in the hips for a boundary corner
