Probably Germans.
But was that the right call by the refs? I just went to a 226 page PDF of rules and could not find that specific rule.

if he actually signaled a fair catch, then yes the penalty is correct.

from my view (which was great) i saw him wave downwars and not upwards telling his teammates to let it go. unless i blinked i never saw him wave over his head to signal the fair catch.
i lost my voice on that one.

For what it is worth Doug Moreau said that the SEC official in the press box (don't remember his name) actually pointed out in writing what the rule is to Doug and after Doug read it he agreed that the call was correct ... although a crazy rule.

Basically, the rule says that ANY MOVEMENT is indicative of a fair catch .. when I heard that I told my husband "god I hope he doesn't have an itch anywhere" ... he'd be called for a fair catch.

Don't hate on me ... I'm just passing on what was said on the radio play by play.

Probably the right call according to the rules. I personally think it not a good rule.

It was the opposite of the fair catch signal, it was the "I'm not catching this ball so back the frick off lest it touches one of you" signal. Terrible call both times it was called, however one resulted in the loss of about 10 yards and one resulted in the loss of a touchdown. Different ballgame if it's 28-20 instead of 28-13.

Even if it wasn't whistled down, he wouldn't have scored.

Yeah, you're right tigers91. It was the right call. I didn't know it at the time, but Gary and Verne explained it.

You are welcome! Heard also on the aftershow I think it was is that the players call "Peter Peter Peter" which means DON'T LET IT TOUCH YOU!

SUCKS! But that's the rule ... I need to watch more closely and see if it should ever be called during other games.

The same call was made against Ole Miss last night ... "illegal signal" I think it was?

Peter-Ball=sore dick, you don't want to touch it.

Question though...You can call a fair catch when the ball is on the ground? So that means you could wave fair catch when the ball is rolling around and the defense has to let you pick it up right?

it was a good call. i went into a referee forum and they were already discussing this rule.
i didnt like it but as long as the refs got it right i have no problem with it.

FWIW, its apparently only a rule in college not in the NFL. Guy from the Giants did the exact same thing and wasn't penalized.

I'm still not sure what the reasoning for the rule is though.

naw

the dead ball rule only applies to the receiving team

if the ball touches a receiving team player the kicking team can recover it a

both movements signal the same thing

both say, "we're not returning this ball"

reminded me of at auburn a few years ago with the no jumping over a player or whatever during the extra point miss.

It seems to me though that once the ball touches the ground it should be fair game. The rule can't be to prevent injury IMO.

I think it comes from the move last year where a team waved his hand over his head once (you need to do it multiple times for a fair catch call), and the defense slowed down and as a result he ran back for a TD.

Seems kinda stupid to make it ANY kind of signal though, especially when a lot of players used unofficial signals for communication.

Just say any invalid signal over the head is a dead ball.
