Brasas Peru -quick review

48 hours ago I didn’t even know about this place but went last night for dinner. They don’t have their liquor license yet (pending), so I brought two bottles of wine from my cellar to go with the excellent Peruvian food. I spoke with the owner who is from Perú who said they have only been open for one week. The entire staff was very attentive and pleasant. Service was excellent and food came out very quick. I like to take a very slow approach to dinner so I had them space the courses out and they accommodated wonderfully.
Ironically, I just made Pollo à la Brasa chicken last week for Fourth of July based on one of the recipes from the previous thread in TD, so my pallet is accustom to some of the spices and peppers they use in some of their dishes. I did not order chicken last night, but they make a lot of sauces that have some of these Peruvian peppers like Aji Amarillo and Aji Panca. One of their sauces was an olive-based sauce, and another actually had Oreos in it although I could not taste any Oreos or sweetness. They cook with a lot of potatoes, either mashed and fried or French fried potatoes. They like their carbs and so do I.
Started with Papa Rellena which is like an Aranchini but made with a fried soft mashed potato ball stuffed with meat, raisins, eggs. Delicious and very fresh. paper thin, crispy shell with creamy interior.
then Causa Rellena which is a chilled mashed potato, layered with chicken salad and avocado, with some of the Aji Amarillo sauce and olive sauce. Delicious and creamy.
They then brought out an unexpected complementary dish to snack on which are like corn nuts made in house with a variety of their pepper sauces. Nothing outrageously spicy, but all delicious and unique.
We shared two entrées, the majority of which we had to take home because we were getting full, but the first was Lomo à lo Pobre which is marinated fillet mignon with an excellent rice, plantains and fries
and Cebiche Carretillero which is a stack of ceviche topped with nuggets of fried fish. All very excellent and fresh. Peruvian corn on the cob. Look at those huge kernels. Slightly different texture and flavor from regular corn.
We didn’t need dessert but wanted to try something so they recommended this donut dessert. I’m not sure what it’s called but it was quite delicious fresh with a wonderful caramel sauce.
All and all a wonderful experience for a restaurant that has only been open one week. They obviously are trying very hard and the kitchen is really doing well. Everything was freshly made and hot. The fried items were extremely hot, and obviously just out of the fryer, which is a sign of an attentive kitchen and waitstaff. I made some friends and will certainly be back.

What city is it in?

Baton Rouge. It’s in the old Marie Calendars building on Perkins.

Just tried takeout and will do it again. Whole grilled chicken is served as quarters, nice smoke and a little char. White meat a bit dry, but 4 sauces were provided. Fries are thick. Salad is a nice mix of large leaves plus chopped tomato, avacado, radish, etc. The servings of salad and fries were large...could serve 4. Price under $40.
They are waiting on their alcohol permit and will have pisco for sours.
At 5:30pm Saturday, traffic was very light.

Thanks for the review! Went tonight and will definitely go back. We had the empanada, 1/2 charcoal roasted chicken with salad and plantains and (forgot the name) but was essentially a seafood risotto. Finished up with the piccarones for desert- food was great and service was attentive.

Nice review. Love Peruvian food. I wonder if they will add Jalea onto their menu at some point.

Be sure to order more grilled chicken than you can eat at one sitting. Wrapped yesterday's leftover take-home grilled chicken in foil and warmed in toaster oven 10m. Picked one of 10 packs of sauce from yesterday to spice the chicken. Great leftovers!
