We will be in Scottsdale late Sept/early Oct. Is traffic still heavy after Labor Day? We are looking heading up in the morning and back mid afternoon on either a Thursday or Friday.
Would Thursday be a better choice than Friday or no difference? TIA

Not responsive to your question, so apologies, but I'd skip Sedona altogether and try to get up to Flagstaff instead. Unless you're staying at one of their posh spas, Sedona was really reminiscent of PCB with a turquoise fetish.

Ohhhh it starts getting worse….due to all the snowbirds from mostly Canada that start moving to their winter homes in AZ

Also heads up….they are doing a MASSIVE road project on the I-17 (basically the only way to get to Sedona on a major highway) for the next few years and they routinely shut down the entire highway in parts at night so they can do rock blasting. It’s usually late at night to early am…but just something to keep in mind.

Sedona is unbelievable but I'm not sure how you could do much in half a day.

I suggest spending more than a half day in Sedona. There’s plenty to do & see in Scottsdale; don’t know that venturing up to Sedona for just a day would be worth your time.

I love both cities, so I’d make sure I spent at least three days in each.

You could def enjoy a day there. Go see the chapel in the rock(amazing views from the top). Have lunch somewhere. Do a pink Jeep tour. Drive up 89A up to the scenic overlook at the top (buy real Native jewelry for cheap if you have a woman with you) and drive back(one of the most scenic drives you can take).

I agree it would be best to spend more than a day there but you can still enjoy the gorgeous views of the red rocks

My recollection is that it was a solid 2 hour drive. That would be a tough day trip but doable I guess....really wouldn't be much time to experience what Sedona offers. Taking in the scenery and maybe a jeep tour might be doable....but i can't imagine much more than that.

Good luck...

I’ve traveled to Sedona for day trips numerous times over the past several years. Some for just myself to go hiking, some for showing friends or family in town Sedona for the first time. It’s not that bad.

Leave early in the am. Get to Sedona, go see chapel in rock (a must see but you won’t be there long). Stop at scenic spots to take in the red rocks and take pics. Do lunch. Do a pink Jeep tour or find a trail to hike or drive up 89A for scenic drive. Head back late afternoon.

If you come back go through Cottonwood AZ and eat at COLT grill. Amazing food and drinks.

Looks like they have a location in Sedona now too.

Bingo. I have been to Sedona a few times. The two other couple we will be with have not. Planning on leaving around 8am. We will be on east coast time so that is easy.
Simple question. If we head up early morning then head back to Scottsdale around 2-3 will traffic be any worse on a Friday versus Thursday?

I don’t think so. Traffic heading north on I-17 is worse on Fridays cause of everyone going up north for the weekend after work…so you will be going the opposite direction when you are coming back.

Thank you. Nothing worse than a two hour drive turning into four.

Like others have mentioned, Sedona needs a few days.. and it’s going to be hot hot hot if you’re planning on hiking that time of year.

Not really. Sedona highs are probably at the most …. low to mid 80s late September/early October

Either you went to Sedona for the wrong reason or you’re blind. The landscape and number of accessible short hikes in Sedona make it top notch

I think Sedona is way too cool a place to drive so far for < 1/2 day visit and then Drive back. But, to each his own.

Is it possible you got sucked into the vortex at the Airport overlook?
