A great song that exemplifies the above meme well is Suzanne Vega's Luka
An upbeat musical sounding song with lyrics about domestic violence.
quote:

My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before

If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble, some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was

I think it's because I'm clumsy
I try not to talk too loud
Maybe it's because I'm crazy
I try not to act too proud

They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore

Yes I think I'm okay
I walked into the door again
If you ask that's what I'll say
And it's not your business anyway

I guess I'd like to be alone
With nothing broken, nothing thrown
Just don't ask me how I am
Just don't ask me how I am
Just don't ask me how I am

My name is Luka
I live on the second floor
I live upstairs from you
Yes I think you've seen me before

If you hear something late at night
Some kind of trouble, some kind of fight
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was
Just don't ask me what it was

They only hit until you cry
And after that you don't ask why
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore
You just don't argue anymore

“Barbie Girl” from Aqua

It’s a song about an anthropomorphic doll that is designed to conform to societal beauty and fashion norms. She is stuck being a child’s play thing, whether that be changing clothes, brushing of hair, or even being taped to a ceiling fan for laughs from the male children in the house.

All the while, she just want to be a normal girl with her “friend” Ken, instead of an object for humans to use for their satisfaction.

Pretty fricking dark. But the beat is fun.

A beat alone cannot make a song somber or joyful. I think you are confusing it with melody

Most 10,000 Maniacs songs were like this. Bouncy, upbeat music with serious or downright depressing lyrics.

It's terrible music, and the awful lyrics don't really get lost.

Tatooed Love Boys

Chrissie Hynde sings about a brutal gang rape at the hands of a biker gang.
quote:

I was a good time, yeah, I got pretty good
At changing tyres, upstairs bro'
I shot my mouth off
And you showed me what that hole was for

Now I see you all impressed and half undressed
You got paint stick all over the scars and lumps and bumps
The 'T' love boys have got you where I used to lay
Well ha ha and too bad, but you know what they say

Stop snivellin'
You're gonna make some plastic surgeon a rich man
Oh, but the prestige and the glory
Another human interest story,

Ska is like that, including Sublime and their hit song, Santeria.

"I don't practice Santeria, I ain't got no crystal ball
Well, I had a million dollars but I'd, I'd spend it all
If I could find that Heina and that Sancho that she's found
Well, I'd pop a cap in Sancho and I'd slap her down...

...What I really want to say,
Tell Sanchito that if he knows what is good for him
He best go run and hide
Daddy's got a new .45
And I won't think twice to stick that barrel straight down Sancho's throat
Believe me when I say that I got something for his punk arse"

The New You by the Vandels is pretty dark, but upbeat and dark but this is true for a lot of punk. The Ramones had a lot of this kind of tune.

For the total opposite, there is Jersey Girl by Tom Waits but his voice just makes everything sound sad.

Benny Mardones was groomin' before it was cool.

Into the Night

She's just 16 years old
Leave her alone, they said
Separated by fools
Who don't know what love is yet
But I want you to know
If I could fly
I'd pick you up
I'd take you into the night
And show you a love
Like you've never seen, ever seen
