When adding scores to my handicap I usually default to the rules used by my club in most of the tourneys.

We will decide bunker play ahead of time and is almost always, lift, rake and place.

On or just off the fairway we can play it "up" one scorecard so long as the situation isn't improved. Meaning, you can't move your ball from the rough to the fairway or fringe to the green BUT you can keep the ball on the fringe and move it within a scorecard.

They will generally mark bad spots on the course as ground under repair so it's pretty easy to know what those areas are, look like, etc. so you aren't penalized for a good shot.

A bad spot just off the green totally missing grass, okay..move it.

Under a tree 25' from the green...you play it from the same location (or close to).

You can spin the shite out of a ball on hard pan. You just have to take ball first and pick it. My whole home course is hard pan right now. We need rain so bad

In my group (handicaps range from +4 to 12), we generally try to play it down within reason. Our bunkers are garbage, so we usually allow for rake and replace, but this is always stipulated ahead of the round.

I personally struggle with the concept of hitting it in the middle of the fairway and having a garbage lie due to poor course conditions, but in my group am in the minority with this opinion. Since we almost always play it down, I am learning to make better contact from these marginal spots.

I’m improving lie in all except maybe a bunker that isn’t raked.

1. It’s not the tour
2. I paid to play to have fun not be pissed
3. I’m not going to frick up my club hitting off roots or rocks

If playing with friends for money we set those rules

Great golfers like tight lies because they hit ball first with a descending blow. I’m a weekend hacker and would rather be in the second cut than be in the fairway because I sweep the ball and need it sitting up.

Breaking a club? That’s bad. Breaking your wrist and having to not play for several weeks is awful.

Roll the ball if you might hurt yourself.

So, you're saying you figure your handicap on your own? Then do what you feel is fair. A real handicap is going to require official submitting of scores and I doubt a course with those kind of conditions is participating honestly. I would guess that your unofficial handicap is probably at least 4 shots lower than your actual.

Are you not aware of things called apps? There are about 1000 handicap apps. In fact, the USGA even has one, you pay a yearly fee and track your official USGA handicap on it.

If the ball isn’t playable, move the ball. If you want to keep it fair, move it backwards distance-wise but out of the unplayable spot

I’m definitely not Ernie Els first of all

Second of all I don’t mind full swing or punches off of hard pan. Finesse shots off of hard pan are impossible.

A course I play a lot (in Dallas), is set up so when you miss the green you are often down a hill and have an uphill chip onto the green and sloping away. Problem is it’s Dallas and if they haven’t taken care of the course, you’re supposed to hit a flop shot up a hill off of hard pan to a green sloping away, that’s damn impossible

- hit into a bunker and there is no sand, it’s basically a rock hard dirt pit

I normally find a shred of grass close by. Typically don't back it out because it was going to be a harder shot anyway.

Definitely not hitting in mud. Almost all the courses in N LA, even the nice ones, have hard pan. So either hit off of it or if there's a clump of grass right by.

- hit the fairway but you’re ball is on dirt or worse on a crack in the ground

Never had one land in a crack but I'd definitely be moving it out of that.

- other situations that come up due to poor course maintenance

If a green has a dead spot/tons of bumps in one section, I'll move it. If you were playing in a tournament at the beginning the official should tell you you can move it from a bad spot on a green. If a tournament would let you do it, nothing wrong with doing it in a regular round.

All of those things make golf less fun, no need to go out there and be mad because of course conditions.
