It's gotta be Milazzo with the pitchers we'll be using today.

milazzo's swing is terrible. pitch him away and he has no chance the way he is stepping out

Decent catcher but not great.

Doesn't block well
Framing is inconsistent
Depends on reaching too often

Better bat by far

Travinski is sloppy behind the plate. I’m not a fan of how he doesn’t hold or frame the pitch for a few seconds or how he bails out too quickly before the strike or ball is called. Those sort of things piss umpires off and make it less likely for you to get the future close calls.

Milazzo has actually batted well all season.

Except he didn't. Just because his batting average is 'ok', doesn't mean that he can produce runs. I love the guy. His defense is elite, but he isn't helping us score runs. For example, Pearson has a worse batting avg. than Milazzo, but he gets on base more, scores more runs, and knocks in more runs as well. Batting average isn't everything and that is all Milazzo has going for him offensively. I'm not trying to shite on the guy. If Travinski is hurt, I'm 100% fine with Milazzo starting. But one guy helps us score runs and that is Travinski

It’s not just the past balls with Stravinsky, it’s the way he receives the ball. In fact, “receive” isn’t the right word for what he does. He’s like King Kong on top of the Empire State Building swatting airplanes. It costs several strikes a game, especially with not ready for prime time umps.

So far in the CWS

Trav 0-7, 1 BB, 3 K, 3 LOB

Milazzo 0-3, 1 K, 1 HBP, 4 LOB

Travinski has not had more than one hit in a game since the Tulane game and at least 1 K in every game since. He has been struggling.

He's literally played four games since June 5th and scored in three of them.

Travinski’s bat is needed against WF.

I agree with that but the upside is the difference. Travinski can hit for power and cleanup duty but the odds of Milazzo actually getting a base hit are slim to none.

Plus he's an average catcher

You are being way too kind. He's barely a catcher. Not just because he tries to backhand everything in the dirt, but also because he doesn't even attempt to frame pitches. He has put so many extra pitches on our arms this season.

True.

But two of those "one hits" were HRs. He also scored a run in 8 straight games prior to Monday night. Even though he has struggled (and he's not the only Tiger who has) he's still a threat at the plate for an extra base hit. Milazzo, at best, is a threat for a single.

But everything else being equal, the analysis really boils down to do you think LSU's pitching staff will limit Wake form scoring more than 3-4 runs tonight. If you think so, then having a good defensive catcher in a tight, low scoring game is a plus. If you don't, then having a guy who is no threat at all from plate is a big negative when you may need 6, 7, 8+ runs.

Wake is the top hitting team in the country. The back half of LSU's inconsistent bullpen will handle all of the pitching tonight. While nothing is certain (see last night) that combination makes it more probable than not Wake will score at least 5 runs or more. Given LSU has only scored more than 5 runs once in the CWS (and it took a 9th inning HR to do that) it is more probable than not you are going to have to have the most production out of your line up you have had in the CWS thus far.

We ALL hope the LSU staff can be lights out again tonight. But a manager sets a lineup based upon the best information he has at the time. That information suggest Wake is going to score more than 3 runs tonight and LSU will have to keep up (and exceed) to stay alive.

His run production outweighs the dropoff in defense.

In regular season play, yes. The CWS, no. Plus the wind blowing in the way it is also eliminates that.

He's certainly no Milazzo behind the plate

This is why Milazzo needs to be in. You’re facing elite pitching at this stage which means low scoring games. You have to limit mistakes defensively the best you can in games like these. So right now you go with the better pitcher. We still have plenty of guys in our lineup who can come through for us hitting wise.

Check the OSU box score (two games after Tulane). He went 3 for 6, 1HR, 2 runs, 2 RBI.

For the regionals, he was 6 for 14, 2HRs, 2 BB, 5 runs, 5 rbi. Admittedly, he hasn't done this in his 4 games since. But everyone has a down spot. He's been hot for 2 months and we need his bat.
