...but, it's safe to say in this Washington Commander/Cleveland Guardian world, this commercial would NEVER be made now.

Old rivals resume a bitter argument

I hear this a lot too...listening to podcasts about movies is where I hear it most, and it seems that this phrase is always followed by it's close cousin..."it barely got made back then!" by the hosts or sometimes it's people who were actually involved in the creation of whatever is being discussed.

First heard that when someone was recounting a Mel Brooks quote wherein he said exactly that in regards to Blazing Saddles. I heard Brooks say it himself on WTF/Marc Maron, so I believe him. But it comes up a lot for other movies where I can imagine there was no second thought about the content of an objectionable scene in a movie that has now been labeled as "Could Never Be Made Today"

The latter always sounds like a half arse excuse that nobody needed.

I tend to find myself watching movies/TV and seeing an actor cast in a role and saying, "That casting would never happen today," more than I say "This could never be made today," about an entire movie or TV show episode/series, but it sucks that society has gotten to this point. They should take "In God We Trust" off our currency and replace it with "Lighten Up...Francis." until we get our shite together.

Lord of the rings trilogy. The casting was also damn near perfect and couldn't be replicated. Game of thrones s1 also had near perfect casting. Probably couldn't be replicated.

Indeed, people nowadays would make it their mission to purposefully frick up the casting in their slavish devotion to the message.

It’s a really silly phrase given the content that gets released today like The Idol

Does The Idol go places that would offend the modern religion?

Speaking of that commercial, with all the praise for Tom Cruise and his stunts, Ron Ely wrestled real lions as Tarzan, and had hospital stays and scars to prove it.

Tom Hanks would probably get roasted by the LGBT community today if this came out.

Casting and story based on the source, not politics... imagine that.

Tropic Thunder has a cornucopia of themes that would keep it from being made today.

It's still fricking hilarious though.

Silence of the Lambs. It was controversial when it was released, and that was over thirty years ago.

I can’t post it, but there was a 2000s “great taste” vs “less filling” Miller commercial with women in lingerie wresting in a water fountain.

Now THAT would never get made today.
