On my Southwest road trip with my daughter, and for two nights we stayed in Las Cruces. I wasn’t expecting much. I was thinking some rust belt city with just a bunch of dirty people and run down buildings.
Holy shite was I wrong. That was probably the cleanest city I’ve ever visited. Everything looked liked it was just built and opened yesterday. Everyone was super friendly. I did not see a single bum on a corner asking for money. There was ZERO trash, even along the hwys. It’s nicely located in south NM, for a jump off point for several spots, Whites Sands (45 mins), Truth or Consequences for the hot springs (60 mins), Cloudcroft (90 mins), and Carlsbad Caverns (3hrs but with amazing driving scenery thru Cloudcroft).

I’m now in Santa Fe, a city I have loved to visit, but it has turned. Bums on every corner, sketchy people in the historic plaza and downtown. It’s not clean anymore, it use to be one of the cleanest cities I’ve visited. The food here is still amazing, but we decided to cut our road-trip a day short, start heading home. Get to Dallas tonight and be home for the game.

BTW, we are staying in Madrid, a place I still love. Waking up this morning to 49 deg weather, sitting outside at the local coffee shop, just enjoying the mountain views, talking to the super friendly, local hippies.

I'd assume you went through the better parts of town. Still, probably a lower crime rate than Baton Rouge.

Living in Las Cruces offers a lot of exciting opportunities, such as breathtaking views, affordable cost of living, no traffic, and fun holiday festivals and traditions. However, some of the cons include a high tax rate, a lack of entertainment options, and a high crime rate.

There used to be a place south of Las Cruces that had pirahnas in a fish tank with gold fish. I remember it as a kid. That's all I've got.

Las Cruces is fine, its biggest issue is the proximity to the border and absolutely nothing else being close. But NM is a great state to road trip.

I don't know who decided we were going to let this happen to basically every once lovely city in this country.

Every time I drive through Las Cruces I think about how the New Mexico State football stadium is right in the middle of the I-10/I-25 split. I know only 100 people go to their games but that has to be amazing for postgame traffic. If only Tiger Stadium was right in the middle of two interstates.

I also won $500 on a scratch-off I bought at the Loves west of town one time.

Was recently there as well, spent a night. We were pleasantly surprised as well. Would consider living there for lower cost of living.

We sat outside and had a drink on Main Street, also of course went to White Sands.

Mesilla is a nice town square area too.

Las Cruces is great. We are there frequently. We are in Santa Fe frequently as well. It’s changed to some extent, but it’s still awesome
Not sure what you experienced that was so off putting, but it’s a wonderful place still. My wife is there right now with friends and they’re having a magical time. We were there 4 weeks ago and had an amazing time. We will be there again in 10 days. Not sure what is so worrisome (panhandlers? buddy… go 2 hours east of Las Cruces to Tucson if you want to see some real tent city craziness). Anyway, sorry it was a bad experience, but Santa Fe is still amazing.

Hah. I was drunk and half asleep posting. But yeah… point stands… I’ve never seen a homeless community as big as Tucson outside of like huge San Fran.

Very interesting, noted. Was interested in going to Tucson, maybe now not so much.

Cloudcroft (90 mins),

Best bbq I ever had was in Cloudcroft at Mad Jacks.

Las Cruces is a nice little city. I enjoyed it. And a really great area to road trip.

I don't know why people are surprised homeless people are in cities. Where do you expect them to be? The cornfields of Nebraska?

People from New Mexico are very friendly minus the Santa Fe wackos.

It is poor but people generally are happy, and have a relaxed disposition.

Noticed this too... We were commenting on how nice they all were.

Also oddly enough, kept insisting we have some pie haha, proud of their pies at places. (We never tried any though).

Why did you think NM was in the Rust Belt?

I'd you're from the cornfields of Nebraska you probably don't expect any homeless at all.
My kids don't really know what a homeless person is. That is sort of beyond them. They've never seen one

All of Route 66 across north NM, is in the rust belt. It’s a shame what the interstates did to those towns.
