Right. And we are after other infielders that have better hitting stats. Like Wehiwa Aloy. But Aloy did it in the WAC and is not nearly the defender Braswell is.

There is a risk that any small conference guy you get, no matter how gaudy the stats, may not adjust well to the SEC.

Interesting..he pitched his freshman year too. He had 3 saves with 9 Ks in 5 IP.

Are we to assume Gavin Guidry won't transition to SS and stay at pitcher?

Maybe the plans are for him to play 2B and not SS.

Yep lol. This kid is a very good pickup. Very talented and experienced in the sec. Very nice addition.

At SS, I need a good defensive player first. It’s a key position for us

Probably the biggest factor. We are especially light on experience in the middle infield next year. And SEC experience is a huge plus.

mid .970s fielding percentage... compared to mid .930s fielding percentage for Jordan Thompson. Doesn't have the offensive juice Thompson did to run it out the park as much, but walks a good bit and fields the ball well.

Shelton is probably better.

Hate to be that guy, but it sure seems like we could have found someone with much better batting numbers in the portal.
I dont know anything about the kid. But I, unlike some here, trust JJ on all things offense. Not the best weather guy, but he teaches an approach that seems to work. He just creates hitters. We need an elite defender at SS. Let him and GG and whoever else fight it out.

Shelton doesn't solve for the things Braswell solves for, so no, he wouldn't be better.

Would he also help? Absolutely. But he's not a replacement for what Braswell brings to the table.

From a SC paper.

quote:

Braswell played at third, short and second base for USC in 2023 and hit .255/.372/.353 in 153 at-bats. The Mableton, Georgia, native is a surehanded defender who can play multiple infield positions but has yet to show power at the plate with three career home runs.

Guys, those three numbers are his batting average, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage.

LINK

He’d better be a good fielder because he doesn’t hit for average and has virtually no power. He would definitely be a weak link in the batting order in the nine hole. He’s in the portal because he lost his starting job.

I’m hoping he’s just a depth piece.

Looks like he is raw and has a tone of potential. Did not get as much run this year after a solid freshman year, but the glove is above average and size is great.

This article shows him as a possible 2024 top 200 prospect list, I'm sure Jay sees the potential and hopefully will unlock it.

He's got 2 years of eligibility left.... an infielder. I like it.

At worst he's a late game defensive replacement. At worst.

Good obp and can always improve. Either will start or a utility guy we could use.
